The Quote Of The Day – Why Don’t We Have Financial Education In School?
Today’s quote of the day made me remember an experience I recently had with my oldest son.
He, preparing for his sophomore year, was in the process of selecting his classes for the upcoming school year. He’d asked for my help so we were sitting down looking through his options.
Some classes were mandatory but he had some electives he had to select as well. I began trying to assess his interests and help him select something that aligned with those.
I typically try not to be overbearing and make all of the decisions for my kids. Especially a 15 year old. I’m raising him to be a man, right?
I have to start training him to make his own decisions.
Until I saw….
We were going through his available electives and we came across a course called…
Personal Financial Responsibility.
Here’s the course description:
As you can see, they make the course available for grades 10-12, so in a rare circumstance, I told my son that he HAD to take the class.
He didn’t have an option.
Robert Kiyosaki is exactly right in our quote of the day.
Academics are important. But financial education is equally important. I honestly believe if I had to pick one….
I’d say financial education is MORE important.
Let’s be real here. We live in a capitalistic society.
So a person with a ton of academic intelligence but zero financial intelligence will get outdone easily by someone with a ton of financial intelligence but no academic intelligence.
I’d put money on it. And I’m not even a betting man.
So I was pleased to see that my son’s high school at least offered a course on financial responsibility. But I was disheartened to see that it was only for one funky semester…
But hey…beggars can’t be choosy right?
Which brings us back again to the quote of the day. Why isn’t financial education seen as valuable to our school system administrators?
This truth is one of the largest travesties in our world today in my opinion. To train our children in areas of vocation or business in which they can go out and earn a financial living….
Whether as an employee or as an entrepreneur….
Yet provide them with no financial base to manage the money they earn?
I personally believe we are setting our children up for failure by not doing so.
So unless a child is lucky enough to live in a household that teaches them sound financial principles or happens to self-educate on these topics….
They’ll more than likely be shit out of luck.
It’s time for a change. It’s time for financial education to be given the same weight in our schools as academic education.
Learning how to manage personal finances, make sound financial decisions, and be taught strategies to build generational wealth are more important than learning what the state capitals are…..
Or memorizing mundane facts that will provide no tangible use in the real world.
Maybe I’ll ruffle a few feathers with this blog post.
Good.

P.S. I didn’t learn any of these important financial principles in school either….
But luckily I’ve been able to learn on my own by seeking out educators like Robert Kiyosaki.
