(San Jose, California)-If the write is not mistaking we ended yesterday with the asking of what is action? And does action have an activity with in itself with no relations to or interference of anything else? Is this clear? The writer is saying an action in of it self, not an action that is out of motive or intensions but direct action in of itself? May we go into this a little? Will you apply your self so that the brain is active and alert by putting aside your own prejudice and bias? Will you?
Is “love” the action in of it self? Not the “love” that has jealousy, hate, amusement, fun, excitement, sex and pleasure that’s not “love”. But real “love”, the writer is aware if you haven’t applied your brain it is impossible to know this “love” that he is talking about? So follow for a while and we will look at it together? You see when there is “love” there is action without conflict. And “love” is not a slave to time, now if one can understand this and deeply grasp the truth of it and then the brain becomes extraordinarily vital and strong not confused in any way because you are living “now” completely. Fear of the future and past disappears.
We should also go into together the question of suffering? Which is a part of our life. There is not a single human being that is not of this suffering, every human being whether it’s the monk in the Himalayans, the man in the street, the priest in the Catholic Church, you, me every human being on earth suffers. And we make others suffer this is our cycle. This is very serious and you may laugh it off, but if ones child or mother or wife is destroyed by war then you will know what it means. We all know what it means but it will go on in the same old patterns.
Then we have the sorrow of humankind and what we think is our own particular sorrows, which is my daughter is dead and my father is dead. There is the sorrow of seeing another suffer, the sorrow of those who can never read or write, those who are extraordinarily poor, all of this is sorrow not just the sorrow of humankind but the sorrow of each one of us. Each one thinks that it is my sorrow not yours. But sorrow is not your or mine but it is sorrow. For one to see this it requires the freedom to observe and perceive. But we have become so individualistic; so narrow and small we have reduced everything to our own limited little garbage cans.

Sorrow is sorrow of all humankind it is not your or mine. And one ask can that sorrow ever end or is it the fate of all humankind? To kill nature and the animals and to kill each other? Not only to kill verbally or by a gesture, killing millions and millions with one bomb. Sorrow of disease and pain, not gaining and loosing, all of this is sorrow, take it all in. Can this sorrow ever “end”? Sorrow is not sentimental or romantic it is a dreadful thing. This is something that is so concerned with every human being, the loneliness of it, the anxiety and pain of it. Can this entire thing end; probably we have never asked that question?
Furthermore we have never faced it; take a drug or alcohol in order to escape it or so that we have the illusion of not suffering. We have never faced the seriousness of sorrow that is to give our complete attention to sorrow. Not vaguely through words and some kind of speculative hope and so on. But to actually live with it without becoming bitterer. That is to give ones whole complete attention to it.
Attention is like a fire, when it is there the pain, tears, anxiety, loneliness all is burned away to ashes and disappears, attention is a flame that never goes away. Sorrow the root meaning of that word is passion. The “ending” of sorrow is passion, not lust. We never have passion, we live with pleasure and passion is something that is extraordinarily different. Where there is the “ending” of sorrow there is passion this is not your passion or my passion it is passion and it is a part of life.
Where there is “love” there is compassion and where there is this extraordinary passion of compassion there is intelligence. And that intelligence acts. We should talk over together this enormous problem of death? The one thing that is absolutely certain irrevocable is that we all die one day or another. This is a fact and we have never gone into the question because most people are afraid of it, what is “death”? What is it to die and why have we made death something far away from life/living? Do you understand the question? We are living now and death may come to us when we are 60, 80, 100 years later much much later one hopes. So there is a long gap between the now and the future. Do understand what the write is saying?
If you have applied your brain in the previous talks/accounts the now contains the future there fore to die is now. Do you follow? Lets go into it slowly? What is it and why is that we are frighten of death? We are frighten of living obviously, what we call living is a fearful turmoil, conflict, struggle, pain, anxiety economic stringency, a perpetual disagreement with each other. One opinion oppose to another opinion the constant getting up in the morning getting ready and rushing off to the office, factory or labs. The writer wonders if you are aware of how we spend our days and years? This is what we call living and we cling to that because that is all we know and we want to escape from it so this is why we have such a tremendous industry of entertainment sports, cinema. And lets not forget about the religious entertainment, don’t say this is not an entertainment because it has nothing to do with day to day living-organize religion.
So don’t say one is an entertainment and the other is more holy, it is still an entertainment because it brings on sensations. Please don’t think that one is blasphemy we are just facing the facts. So from the moment we are born until we die problem after problem, the solutions for the problems and in the solutions there is 15 other problems, ones brain has been trained since childhood to resolve problems mathematical, geographical, technological, engineering problems, you follow, so our brains have been conditioned from childhood to resolve problems. Not to understand and see what problems are but to resolve the problem the resolution of the problem and in that resolution organizes in a different way one organization after another.
This is our life politically, socially and economically and we are never for a moment free. An in America we speak about freedom all the time, freedom to choose change jobs, wives, buildings, homes, cars so we think choice is freedom but it isn’t is it? Choice only exists when the brain is uncertain when the brain is clear there is no choice at-all. Now this great sea of confusion, loneliness, despair, and depression the whole cycle of our living. When death comes there is nothing left, you are no more. So we invent reincarnation. Do you believe in reincarnation and if you do then live rightly, live now rightly because if you don’t live now rightly the next life will be exactly then same as you are right now.
Naturally because time whether it is a thousand years or now if there is no right action that can only take place when there is this quality with its perfume of this extraordinary thing called life and if this isn’t there next life will be exactly the same as you are now. Perhaps slightly modified a bigger house or car that’s what we all want. More pleasure is the something continued. So what is death? We have understood what we consider life is a tremendous bondage to time. What is death; there is death to the organism/body we are all getting older every day from the moment that we are born to the moment that we die. And we have never asked what is death while living not when we come to the end of it all? While living we never asked what is the meaning the significance and depth of death? We have never asked what the significance of living there must be something enormously significant about all of this?
LOCK ARMS WITH ME HERE!
Furthermore we are reduced to party little affairs. Now we have never asked that and certainly never have asked what death is. As we went into the ending of fear in the previous talks/accounts one must understand that we must end fear in order to understand the quality and grasp the nature and depth of death. As we said biologically organically we are wasting day after day the organism all of this training, travails, misery, confusion, pleasure, pain, a tremendous wasting of energy. This coming to an end is part of death and also what is it that is dying apart from the physical biological existence what is it that is dying? What is the ME/I/SELF/EGO/PERSONA what ever you like to call it, the “self” lets stick to that one word.
What is that “self” the me that is going to die? This is what we are frightened of not of death but the self. The me, which has been accumulated in this life as memory. Knowledge experience, the me. My selfishness, ambitions, knowledge, all the recorded records that are stored in the brain. Why are we so frighten of the death of this thing called the me? May we examine what is the me? Who are you apart from your name, bank account, where you live, or biologically short, tall with all the rest? Who are you, if you haven’t faced it lets face it now, are you frighten, please don’t be frighten let’s go into it together?
Are we not all the accumulated memories, memory of all the pain, hurt, fears the 10, 50, 100, days of memory aren’t we all that, memories of our pleasure the pain and anxiety of our desires the loneliness, depression, the struggle, aren’t we all that which is all memory. Can you see this, do you follow? Look at it as it is don’t say is there something superior beyond memory? The writer is aware of tis game we play in our heads, we can invent something superior like the soul, the Hindus call it the atman, superior consciousness, the divine, something very very clear and so on. Which are all theories absurdities the actuality is what you are.
This vast collection of memories of humankind. If you are a great technician putting together a neutron bomb one has accumulated a great deal of knowledge and death comes along and you say just one little minute while I finish this please. Which is all the process of gathering and dispensing gathering and dispensing you follow this right, we are this this is a fact? But we don’t like to look at the facts; we say no we are something more. This something is thought saying that this is too small I am sure there is something more. WE ARE A BUNDLE OF MEMORIES PUT TOGETHER BY THOUGHT-face it!
You see then death come along and say my friend this is the end. And we say wait please let me live a little longer. Now please follow this closely and see it for your self? Time is now, time which is the past, present and future is contained in the now so death is now, this means that one is attached (you all are attached to something, right) to there wife or some piece of furniture and death comes along and say that is the end of it, cuts it. Follow me now, can you be free of the attachment, there fore you are LIVING AND DYING at the same time. Do it and you will see what an extraordinary thing it is then? If one is attached to their memories, failure, experiences and ambitions all of that is going to come to an end. So can we live that way? To live now with out a shadow of ambition means tremendous energy, not to reap more pleasure and mischief. So death and life is always together and when this happens actually not theoretically or imaginatively not wishing for it but actually doing it no attachment what so ever.
The writer is aware of the difficulty saying to your wife darling I am not attached to you anymore there will be great trouble. This is a tremendous problem you being free from attachment and she not or she is and your not. Then what is relationship? Is relationship merely the accumulation of memory as pleasure, pain and fear? Is relationship then merely a sensation; the image of each other is that relationship.
You see when there is this separate image there is pain and anxiety, so where there is pain, anxiety and fear “love” cannot be. Now death and life is always marching together! Then there is this sense of absolute freedom from the little travail of myself. The writer feels that it is necessary to understand that which is timeless! If there is such a thing as eternity, we will talk about it another time. To see all of this as a movement of life dying and living and in that senses you never kill another, never deliberately hurt another.
