The Four Steps of Learning

Restored from the Empower Network archive (2011–2017), lightly edited to meet our current advertising standards. Views are the original author’s.

In yesterday’s post we learned that we must have the right mindset in order to manifest our dreams, goals and desires. So how can we ensure we have the “right” mindset? The only way is to reprogram our brain, which is possible when we understand the four steps of learning.

Our mind can be likened to two parts. The first is our conscious mind. This is our thinking mind which is responsible for learning, assessing information through our senses and analysing our environment.

The second is our subconscious mind. This is the part responsible for all that goes on that we don’t see or consciously think about. Our bodily functions happen within the subconscious mind. Our subconscious mind is continuously registering thousands of thoughts throughout the day that we don’t even notice. It is where our dreams come from when we are sleeping.

Our subconscious mind is our single most powerful tool when it comes to building habits, changing our mindset and manifesting our dreams. Habits are formed when they reach our subconscious mind. We also have many various belief systems – some which may be beneficial and some which are limiting – which are stored in our subconscious mind.

The only way to change your mindset and manifest your dreams, goals and desires is to make sure you program your subconscious mind with the right attitude, mindset and thoughts.

The Four Steps of Learning Information

1) Unconscious Incompetence

This is when we don’t know what we don’t know.

Example: I can’t even give you an example of this because… I don’t know what I don’t know…

2) Conscious Incompetence

When we KNOW that we don’t know

Example: I know that I don’t know how do to open heart surgery

3) Conscious Competence

I know that I know it

Example: I know how to blog and build a brand online, but it’s something that I have to consciously think about.

4) Unconscious Competence

I don’t know that I know it

Another way of stating this is: I know it but don’t think about it when I’m doing it… it’s automatic.

This is the level of the subconscious mind.

Example: My brain knows how to send signals to my heart and lungs to breath and pump blood through my veins, but I don’t actually consciously know how to do this. My body does it automatically.

This is the realm of automation. Think of riding a bike. When you first learned how to ride a bike you had to consciously think about it. Now you get on a bike and its effortless. Riding a bike is at the level of unconscious competence because you know it but you don’t know or don’t “think” about it as you are doing it.

When it comes to mindset, we want this information to be at the unconscious competence level. We want to KNOW this information SO well that we don’t even think about it, it’s automatic.

How do we get to this point?

It’s the exact same as riding a bike, tying a shoe lace or anything else that you do on “autopilot”.

Repetition & Observation.

Do it over and over again until its at the subconscious level. Observe others who are doing it. Think about it and focus on it often. Lesson One we covered Who Do You Listen To? Lesson Two we Covered Are you Teachable? Lesson Three we talked about the Training Balance Scale. These tools will help you to observe and learn from the right people, and to focus on repeating actions that change your mindset – which is the most important part of reaching our goals and dreams.

Tomorrow we’ll talk about the exact science of how the law of attraction and manifesting work. Enter your email here to gain access.
