Follow the Cinder Track Whitby

Our last day at Robin Hoods Bay and we braved an excursion on our mountain bikes via the cinder track Whitby to the beach at Whitby where we had a lovely picnic lunch.
The old railway line from Scarborough to Whitby took goods and passengers up and down the North Yorkshire coast from 1885 until its closure in 1965 . It is now an off road route through the North York Moors National Park for walkers, horse riders and cyclists. The cinder track Whitby is so called because the track ballast was made from cinders rather than crushed stone.
Whitby is another history steeped place with the book “Dracula” having been set here and the novelist Bram Stoker said to have written it whilst staying here.
It is cram full of tourists in the Summer and Whitby Abbey is the dominant feature on the landscape with its 199 steps up to it. We didn’t go up these this time with our bikes and all but we definitely did last time and we counted them to make sure!
The beauty of Facebook meant that as I posted that hubby and I were having a picnic on the beach, an “old” friend from school whom I hadn’t seen since then all those coughety splutter years ago commented that she had just arrived also with her dad. After much toing and froing we managed to find each other and here’s a picture of us outside Argument’s Yard to prove it (fortunately we didn’t have an argument so all was well).
So then back on the bikes and back on the Cinder track Whitby back to Robin Hoods Bay and our caravan in time to partake in a small glass of cider and a lovely dinner before a night cap back down in the Bay.
