Examples Affirmations and how to use them

Restored from the Empower Network archive (2011–2017), lightly edited to meet our current advertising standards. Views are the original author’s.

In yesterday’s post How to eliminate Self-doubt and create your own message I mentioned that one way to create your own message to replace the negative voices in your head (that are most likely to have come from someone else in the first place) was to start doing affirmations.

The definition of an affirmation in the sense I am using it here is

Something declared to be true; a positive statement or judgment.

Rules and examples affirmations

For affirmations to be any good, they need to follow these basic rules

  1. Be in the current tense
eg “I am feeling more confident every day” not “I will get more confident” – if you put the affirmation in the future tense, whatever it is you are after will always be in the future as well….. don’t forget tomorrow actually never comes!
  2. Be in the positive eg “I am attracting wonderful people to me all the time”, not “I am no longer attracting negative people into my life”.
Your brain, or psyche or the universe, whatever way you want to understand how this works, doesn’t understand negative words, it only “hears” negative people and will obligingly bring you more!
  3. Be accurate
If you want a precise goal, make sure you state it, if you just say “I am losing weight”, that might mean a pound a year!  How about “I am my perfect weight of x kilogram”
  4. Keep it to yourself
And by that I mean, only talk about yourself in the affirmations, with the best will in the world, you can’t change someone else’s actions or emotions, we are each on our own path. If you wanted to stop being in challenging situations at work with someone for example, you could say something like “I act calmly and professionally whenever I am near John Doe” not “John Doe doesn’t shout at me at work”!
  5. Keep at it
How old are you?  OK well the message you are trying to change could have been wapping around in your head for that many years – two days of the new message is unlikely to completely change your mindset. Repeat, repeat, repeat, out loud if you can – try recording several of them on your mp3 with some lovely meditative music or some really uplifting, powerful pop music in between and play it whenever you can.
  6. Visualise it & say it with feeling
Don’t just repeat it parrot fashion like the lines you were given at school, see it, believe it, feel it – shout it out if you can! (Cars are good places for this one!) Feel you are there in the moment.

I hope that has given you some ideas of how to correctly form your affirmations.  Below are some examples affirmations for you to get some idea but form your own in your own words to make them more effective to you.
