Your Safe Room Can Be A Line Of Defense In An Emergency Situation!!
These days with so much going on in the world and hear at home with terrorist attacks, severe storms with tornados, hurricanes, burglaries it just makes sense to have a safe room.
The safe room or panic room as some call it is becoming more and more a reality for home owners. Most safe rooms are usually found in the expensive homes of the wealthy which are heavily fortified and secure. But times have changed.
Safe Room 101
Most families have a place in their home they consider a safe room where they can hide at and call 911 in an emergency. It’s really not necessary to install steel walls with a steel door, but it would be a wise ideal to put in a fortified door that opens outward and fortified walls.
Remember the key to a secure or fortified door is that it should be made from a material that can withstand someone trying to break through it. Second, also make sure that you install a steel door jamb. This will prevent the door from being kicked inward.
If at all avoidable the safe room should not have any windows. This way no one can get in to the safe/panic room from outside. Some items to include in your safe room would be a phone, first aid kits, bottled water, non perishable food and any defensive weapons that you will need. Also, keep a extra supply of medical supplies in your safe room. You never know if you might need them.
In addition to the items mentioned it’s important to understand that you don’t know how long you might be locked in the safe room if an emergency occurs. So you should plan your safe room to have some type of ventilation, lighting and personal hygiene.
Your Safe Room Could Save Your Life!
There are several reasons why people are investing in a safe room, the most common reasons is burglars. Other reasons might be severe storms, tornados and hurricanes. When a burglary or an emergency happens get to your
fast. The last thing you want to do is try and confront a burglar or look to see what the storm is doing.
Everyone in your family should know where the safe room is and how to use it. Make sure that you instruct your children about the room and how important it is in case of an emergency. Make sure everyone knows that the room is not for recreation or for your young ones to play in. It should only be used for an emergency or a place to hide.
It’s a good ideal to make sure that your safe room has the proper supplies to sustain you while inside. Remember to keep the keys to the safe room with you so now one else can enter the safe room while you are in it.
If you have to use your safe room during a burglary, call the police and make sure that you wait in the safe room until they arrive and clear the situation. A word of advice, never come out of your safe room before the authorities arrive. If an actual robbery is taking place don’t worsen the situation, stay in the safe room.
