A week from today I’ll be on my way home.  As long as hurricane Sandy keeps to the plan and goes through New England before Friday.  My flight is a non stop so I won’t get stuck anywhere.  If they won’t be able to land, they won’t take off.

I have had such a good time being here.  We took the grand kids to the zoo one day, I take them back and forth to school.  The four year old grandson actually snuggles with me now. The whole family had dinner with my son a few days after we got here and Kelly and I are going to his place for a Monday night football bash this Monday.  Small stuff really, rides to boy scouts, snow fights on the way home from school, helping with homework.  The stuff a joyful life is made of. Only thing missing is my Tom.  And the danes.

I’m having a bit of a struggle within myself.  New England is no longer home, it just happens to be where I live. I have wanted to leave New England for five years.  I grew up in Southern California, the west is home.  I began getting home sick when I started going back once a year to see my Grandma.  I hadn’t been home sense my mom died; about 15 years before. Each time I went back, the yearning to go home lasted longer .  Then one by one my kids moved to Colorado.  I had actually gone west in my heart before the last one went.  That would be my oldest daughter.  She had gone south to North Carolina and decided to go west with my grand kids nearly four years ago.

My Tom didn’t want to go at first.  In fact, we nearly parted company over it on top of a few other things.  But we weathered that storm and have been working towards heading west together for the past few years.  We have made some great progress.  We struck gold on our fourth home business.  His job would not transfer him so we had to develop an income before we could go.  Plus we wanted to be able to travel.  So we decided to by an RV and live in that for awhile.  We could be with the kids when ever we wanted and travel as much as we please.  An added bennie was not having to rush into buying a home.  With our roof on wheels we could take as much time as we wanted to find a little town close enough to the kids to be there on a whim.  Far enough out to by a great piece of land and build a ranch.

I am ready to go.  We just have a few more ducks to get in a row.  One of the things I’m doing while I’m here is opening a bank account so we can begin the process of moving our money.  I’ve been checking out local RV parks as well.  Our income is growing all the time. Figured it was time to figure out how much it was going to cost us to make the transition. Once the business has grown enough to cover our living expenses on the road we can go.  The business travels with us.  We will grow as we go.  Kind of exciting really.

Which is the only thing that makes heading back bearable.  Knowing that the time is short and we’ll be headed west by spring.  I’ll walk the danes as the days grow shorter watching the river freeze by slow degrees for the last time.  Probably have to break out my head light when I get home.  I leave the house at six am, by mid winter it will be dark the whole time.  And freezing.  I don’t mind it though.  I just put on another layer as it gets colder.

Before to long I’ll make some changes in my job.  I actually like my job, I work in a Co-op.  But there are days now when we make more in one day in our business then I make in two weeks on the job.  Just wouldn’t make sense to keep going to work instead of putting my time where it will make the most money.  Not that this business takes much time.  But Tom really hates his job.  He is a Post Master.  It gets more unbearable by the day.  Politicians really should get their hands out of the mix.  The post office would be solvent if Congress would stop stealing their money.  But that’s another blog.  Suffice it to say that there are to many chiefs these days making to many rules that contradict each other so it’s impossible to get anything done.  It will be a happy day when he can tell them to take their job and shove it, he ain’t workin there no more.

I have a busy stretch of road ahead.  Finding an RV, selling a house, figuring out what is worth hauling 2500 miles and disposing of the rest. Killing ducks and birthing dreams.  Good stuff. One day soon I’ll be in an RV with my Tom and my danes, headed down my driveway for the last time.  A red letter day in our journey.  I’ll finally really be headed home………
