If possible, use cold water in your clothes washer. Almost 90 percent of energy consumed by washing machines is used when heating the water. Good detergents wash clothes even in cold water. Additionally, it is more energy-efficient if you are washing full loads instead of small ones.

A low flow shower head is a great way to be green. You will be getting the same amount of water as regular shower heads, yet you are not using as much water. You will see a decrease in each water bill cost while benefitting the environment.

In addition to cutting down on the amount of energy you use, consider installing a system to make renewable energy. In addition to being an independent consumer, you will reduce pollution and energy costs. Making your own electricity from renewable sources is a great way to be a more environmentally-friendly consumer.

Upgrading your water heater to a tankless style saves a lot of energy. While they do require energy to heat the water, they require only a small amount of energy to heat a smaller amount of water.
