They can also convince your dog that anything similar in appearance is also an acceptable surface to use for bathroom purposes. Ideally, work on teaching your dog that outside is always the best place to do his or her business.
If you are attempting to train the dog to perform a difficult command, you may want to break it into smaller commands to make it easier for him or her to follow. For example, you might want to train your dog to retrieve the newspaper every morning. He will first need to learn how to hold onto something. Then he should be taught to recognize that item by name. Next, teach him to pick up your paper. Finally, the dog has to learn how to deliver the item to you. Splitting a complex task into individual tasks is a good strategy, because the smaller tasks are easier to learn. Afterwards, the dog simply needs to learn to do them in the correct order.
Make sure your dog is up and active often. Dogs become bored very easily. If you do not have the full attention of your dog, they will be difficult to train. When your dog gets regular exercise, he will be much happier and will pay attention more easily. Regularly take a walk or run with your dog.

Spend some time to learn what all about your dog – what will work for him, what he likes, and which training techniques will be a waste of time.
