Before cooking with skewers there are a few things that you need to know. To get a better hold on the food, use a square or twisted type metal skewer.
Replace the standby liquids of milk and water in recipes to mix things up. Juices, beef broth, or vegetable broth can all be used as a substitute for water. As an alternative to milk, try using thinned sour cream, yogurt, soy milk or buttermilk. A simple switch like changing a liquid in a recipe can improve the nutritional quality while giving the dish a whole new spin in taste.
For maximum sandwich enjoyment, make sure you spread mayonnaise evenly across the bread. Lots of times, people get lazy and just throw some mayonnaise in the center. If you take the time to spread your condiments evenly, your entire sandwich will taste excellent.
To maintain the flavor and freshness of spices and herbs, make sure you keep them stored in someplace that is cool and dark. Many factors can cause herbs and spices to lose their flavor, especially humidity and light. Generally speaking, properly stored herbs and ground spices can keep a good portion of their flavor as long as one calendar year. Spices that are whole will retain flavor longer, closer to 3-5 years. The length of time that they stay fresh depends on how they are stored.
Try grilling some fruit! Slice peaches, melon or nectarines and place them on skewers. Then, lay them on your clean grill till you see grill marks. Top some delicious ice cream with your grilled fruit, or try them on a slice of pound cake, which can also be lightly grilled.
Boost the flavor of anything from soup to mashed potatoes by replacing the water in the recipe or directions with beef or chicken stock. Alternatively, you can stir in bouillon cubes with the water. This helps give the food the right amount of moisture and gives your food an added amount of flavor.
Make sure that you take care with the cooking time for a perfectly baked cake. Box times are more of guidelines than the actual time a cake should be baked. This is due to various factors that can make a difference, such as elevation. To determine if your cake is done, use a toothpick or clean knife blade to find out. Poke it gently into the center of the cake. If the toothpick comes out with no batter on it, the cake has finished cooking. If the toothpick has batter on it when it is pulled out, the cake needs to stay in the oven for a few more minutes or so.
There are a few ways you can heat tortillas properly. One method is to place the tortillas directly on the oven rack until they reach the desired crispness in an oven that has been heated to 350 degrees. You can also place the tortilla right on top of a gas stove top burner set to a low flame. This will make for a crisper, better tasting tortilla.
