Goal Setting Strategies
A Cup Of Leadership
(Strategies in Goal Setting and Goal Getting)
Notes from a Leadership Conference Call on “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” written by Stephen R. Covey
(Also known as “Stephen Covey 7 habits”)
Step One Goal Setting Strategies: The End in Mind
The End: If you know the end destination of something you desire for your business, family or personal life then you need to “Work Backwards.” Create with the end in mind.
The Plan: You have to have a plan; be definitive. Fill in all the goals you need to accomplish once you have established the puzzle framework. Set quarterly, monthly, weekly, and daily goals. With those bite size pieces, you know what you’re striving for, and it will be achievable.
The Homework: This is your ‘homework’ for today: make a blueprint of your end destination (if it is a website for example), and fill in all the blanks as listed above. Bite size pieces.
Step Two Goal Setting Strategies: Think
The Strategy: Be strategic.
The Questions: Ask yourself these questions, and right now out loud, say the answer:
“What do I need to focus on?” Answer:___________________
“What are the priorities?” Answer :___________________
“What do I need to let go of?” Answer: ____________________
“Can I let go of something for now?” Say, “Yes, I can.” (Go ahead, say it.)
Step Three Goal Setting Strategies: Bumps In The Road
The Disruption: Should life ‘happen’ in-between to disrupt your plan, as it so often does, it doesn’t mean to chuck the destination, only revise the goal date—that’s all.
The Control Issue: We cannot control everything around us, nor can we control others. You will get a lot of resistance from other people. Even though we can’t control the external factors, we can control the internal factors: Our attitudes, our thoughts, and our decisions.
The Habits: Change comes with a lot of sacrifice in your life. There are things you need to change so you can devote time to your goal.
The Mindset: You must have an “until, until, until mentality”…”until it is completed.”
It is called, “Just Do It,” by Nike. It is termed, “A Decided Heart,” by Andy Andrews. It is necessary to be, “Relentless,” by Wayne Allan Root.
Step Four Goal Setting Strategies: Action
The Plan: Get up and do the work.
The Timeframe: Shake off yesterday. You have today.
The Joy: Make it simple. Make it forgivable. Be flexible. You don’t want to put so much pressure on yourself that you become frustrated, miserable, or lose your joy. Learn to laugh, and continue forward.
The Consistency: Keep doing your goal until you get accomplished what you MUST do, for YOU.
The Determination: In the face of everyone laughing at you….you must say, “I am going to do this.”
The Conclusion: Just accomplish something every day.
With the End in Mind…
The Final Question: Do you know what You Want?
I hope this inspired you to continue fulfilling your dreams, and brought clarity to help you focus even more on dreaming bigger!
Have an Awesome Day!
