The Art Of Cummunication

Why Does Effective Communication Elude So Many People?

Restored from the Empower Network archive (2011–2017), lightly edited to meet our current advertising standards. Views are the original author’s.

Effective communication eludes many folks because of their surroundings, what they absorb into their brains daily and who they spend time with.

If you don’t believe me, take a look at your everyday life, or maybe you know someone that has poor social skills which relates to lousy communication skills. What do you think is the connection?

Let me give you some examples of people that don’t have effective communication skills…

This is going to be fun because not only do I get some shit off my chest here but you will be able to relate to my experiences -I just know it

One person in my life that I know who has the worst communication skills is my wife’s sister. I’ve tried to be friendly and social with her but it’s not happening.

She is the type of person who believes she knows everything and doesn’t listen to what anyone else has to say. Her mouth never stops flappin’ and what she does have to say either is negative or simply stupid. I’m actually baffled how anyone can think the way she does and actually hold a job or a relationship down.

To be truthful and it’s sad, she has no friends and has a problem with most of her neighbors on the street.

Another person who I think is the clone to my sister inlaw is a guy from work. He is exactly the same. I actually don’t personally know anyone else like this but there has to be more.

Funny I make it sound like they are aliens from another planet – who knows, maybe they are. (haha)

Here is the one trait I know that they have in common…

They both watch the news too much, and they live in self pity. They don’t watch, read or take part in anything positive in life.

Also they both don’t yet understand that we are all born with 2 ears and 1 mouth for a reason.

Listen to David Yoho tell this funny story about a car salesman that wouldn’t take the time to listen.

Here is a positive example of a person who has effective communication skills…

Once my wife and I were thinking about trading in our truck for a mini van because we thought it would make more sense with having two young toddlers.

We went to a dealership and no dealer approached us in the showroom. I then went to the receptionist and asked if I could speak with a salesman. She said they were all busy but somebody will be with me as soon as possible.

Fair enough right?

But I looked around and saw two salesman who appeared to be not busy. So I asked the receptionist if I could speak with one of the gentlemen because they didn’t look like they were busy.

So she goes over to see one of them and he waves us over instead of getting out of his chair to come greet us.

Then sits there holding his head up and asks us what vehicle we were interested in. He didn’t introduce himself, or ask us how we were, or ask us what we are looking for in a vehicle.

So I said to him: never mind, it looks like you don’t need a sale and we can go across the road and see if a sales person over there would like our business. We then got up and left.

He didn’t say a thing.

We couldn’t believe it, the way we were treated.

We actually did go across the road to another dealership and we were treated like gold by a friendly saleswoman.

Actually I’ve never been treated that good by a salesperson since. Weird huh?

But obviously the first salesperson was not a positive person at all and from what I heard from others about him is that he is always like that and has an attitude that his shit don’t stink.

I believe to have effective communication skills and you have to have a positive outlook on life and one way to to achieve positivity is to…

First, you need to block out all negativity such as TV, the news, newspapers and get into positive things and find positive avenues.

Second, find positive things to read or watch. There is lots of great stuff on Youtube. Find a mastermind to take part in. Google it. Find other like minded positive people on Facebook. Get involved with a positive activity outside of the home.

If you do these things you will not only acquire effective communication skills, you will change your life. You will have such a positive outlook, that when communicting with others, you will have positive things to share with them and you will be more open to listen to whay they have to say.
