What You Can Learn From The Super Bowl Ads

Restored from the Empower Network archive (2011–2017), lightly edited to meet our current advertising standards. Views are the original author’s.

super bowl adsThe famed Super Bowl ads, where companies pay millions of dollars for a 30 second spot on one of the biggest sporting events of the year. Why? Simply because they know everyone will be watching and if they do a good job people will be talking about it for years. So what can you learn from their million plus dollar campaigns.

Super Bowl Ads Are Bold

The super bowl ad has to stand out. The goal is to make people talk about it the next day, to get the news agencies to feature it.

If there is nothing unique about it then it will be forgotten.

Much like your marketing, you need to stand out from the crowd. If everyone is saying the same exact catch phrase with the same ad then your message becomes mundane. Consider going against the grain to get your message across.

Super Bowl Ads Are Sticky

If your Super Bowl ad isn’t “sticky” then it will be forgotten in a couple days. Something about it has to be able to identify with the audience or trigger an emotional or personal response. People see hundreds of things everyday but the ones that “stick” are the ones that they can identify with in some way shape or form.

Is your marketing “sticky?” Does it trigger a response? Will people remember it or they need to see it repeatedly time after time just to remember what your product is?

Super Bowl Ads Are Not About The Product

They don’t simply show the product and say “buy.” Often times you won’t even find out what the product is until the last 5 seconds in the ad. Other times they won’t even tell you what the product is, they will spark your curiosity and you will have to visit their website to see what it is. Worse, they will leave a cliffhanger so if you want to find out how it ends you again have to visit their website.

People don’t want the product, they want the result of the product. That’s what you have to sell, that’s what you marketing should be based on.

How Well Would Your Marketing Do As Super Bowl Ads?

Would you be willing to pay for a time slot to show your marketing? If not, then why are you even showing your campaign to the public? You need to make every piece of your marketing as important as a super bowl ad. Really, the marketing is a reflection of the marketer. In this case that would be you. Boost your marketing campaigns by treating each one like it was a Super Bowl ad (except don’t spend nearly as much on it) and implementing similar characteristics.
