How To Start Decluttering in 4 Simple Steps
If you’re like most people, you’ve accumulated a lot’a STUFF of the years, which you’re ready to start getting rid of (in order to downside or make room for the new), but you’re unsure how to start decluttering.
Well today is your lucky day because I’ve picked up a client who is willing to let me document our progress as we declutter her home (one space at a time).
In this video, you’ll meet Shawn DiCapo, the Freedom Fashionista.
She and I are co-founders of ‘Team Love’, where we guide individuals who are looking to build a new business online, in order to get rid of the job they no longer wish to be apart of (by learning to generate additional income online).

How To Start Decluttering in 4 Simple Steps
Step 1: Take a moment to figure out exactly what you’re looking to accomplish.
Shawn was looking for a full overhaul. She had been in her Queens apartment for 10 years which has a whopping two closets which we knocked out in 7 hours.

Step 2: Be patient, honest and realistic with yourself.
Here are a few questions you can ask yourself when it comes time to unclutter your home.
- Do I use it?
- If Yes – – Keep it
- If No – – Toss it
If one of the following words/phrases come to mind…
…Sometimes, I don't know, I’ve never use it or (the worst reason to keep something) It's sentimental [ie: you feel guilty getting rid of 'said item' because of the family member, friend or situation the is connected to it]...
…ask yourself when the last time you used it was and if you can’t recall, get rid of it.
If that’s not a good enough reason remind yourself WHY you want to declutter your home, enjoy the memory that you had forgotten about, smile and then part with it then.
[Bonus Reminder 1] As stated above, if you find yourself getting hung up on the past while decluttering your home, it’s often due to sentiment. If this is the case [or the feeling of guilt], remind yourself that holding onto the past is not making room for what YOU NEED now. Holding onto the past keeps your space clogged up and keeps you frustrated.
Trust me: Once you start to declutter your home one room or space at a time, these items will pop up… and once you start to get rid of them, you will feel a new sense of freedom… which is exactly why you’re looking for articles regarding ways to declutter your home.

Step 3: Once you’ve decided to get rid of something, be committed and stick to it!
[Bonus Reminder 2] The biggest reason why you have so much stuff THAT YOU DON’T WANT OR NEED is because you probably picked up this habit from a parent. If your horrified by the thought of how much crap is in your parents house, remember that you are not them and that The Great Depression has been over for centuries…. then GET RID OF IT, because you are decluttering YOUR HOME… FOR YOU!!!

Step 4: Once you’ve cleared out ‘said room or area’ and the unneeded crap is gone, go back and take a look at what you accomplished, ask yourself how you feel and hold onto that positive sensation. Doing THIS will help you the next time you declutter your home.
