Declutter your life? What’s that?

Have you ever looked around your home and thought, “boy this house is a mess“?

Probably so but most clutterers don’t have a clue where to start.. How do I know?

Because I was a clutterer once and it pained me to see my home in such a mess.

But finally one day, I had a wakeup call.

What made you want to declutter your life Dennis?

A good friend of mines came over one day unanounced. I didn’t have time to do my usual “throw stuff in the room and close the door” routine so it was what it was.

He didn’t say anything at first but he walked in my bathroom and all I heard was

“D your bathroom is FILTHY”

Of course I thought he was joking but he was serious as a fat kid at a cake eating contest. It was my awakening moment that brought the thought in my head that “Dennis it’s time to declutter your life“.

First steps to declutter your life

Now before I get into it, I want to say that I wish I could take full credit for all these tips on how to declutter your life but the truth is, I learned from everything I know about decluttering from the DeCarlo Declutter System.

Declutter your life tip 1 – Don’t think, just do

First thing I did was go through the house and identify everything that I hadn’t used in the last 6 months. Turns out there was a lot.

Yes all that stuff; even the Michael Jackson portrait. Thought I could flip it on ebay. Ended up having it for 2 years with no action.

When it comes to decluttering your house, you can’t think about it. You just have to do it. Get it over with. If you think about it, you may have memories and have 2nd thoughts about throwing it away.

Declutter your life tip 2 – Don’t give stuff away

This makes so much sense. That same friend is a major clutterer but he’s no filthy. He was mad because I didn’t ask him if he wanted any of the stuff. I figured if I gave it to him, I would be hurting his decluttering efforts.

Declutter your life tip 3 – Get rid of all interuptions

When I was decluttering my home, I put my cell phone on silent so there would be no distractions. I have self diagnosed ADHD so it doesn’t take much for me to get off track.

When you’re decluttering with no distractions, it makes time go by so much faster and effortless.

Declutter your life Tip 4 – put everything in a piles

If you have to do this in every room, do it. Designate a decluttering corner where you will place everything that’s going in the trash.

I would even suggest maybe putting down a sheet so when you’re done decluttering, you can just grab each corner and make one trip; and that brings me to my next and final point…

Declutter your life tip 5 – Mentally detach yourself from everything

This is going to be tough for some but the way I did this was as soon as I made the decision to throw something away, I threw it without a care in the world, into the decluttering corner.

Once I threw it, my mind somewhat registered it as trash and I didn’t care about it anymore.

Benefits when you declutter your life

When you life in a clutter free home, things flow so much more smoothly. You wake up happier, your days are happier and you don’t have run around cleaning up when friends are on their way over.

Due to the fact that I work from home, I need a clean clutter free environment because it helps you be a lot more productive. I promise you.

If you’re thinking you need to declutter your life, you’re half way there. The next step is taking action.

You can either apply the knowledge I’ve given you or do exactly like I did and declutter your life completely.

Once again, that system is The DeCarlo Declutter System.

I wish you the best as you declutter your life.
