Amazon kindle is dedicated book reader that reads digital books called eBooks. It is a device that saves large amount of eBooks, giving convince to the user to browse and read books on the go. Amazon kindle has revolutionized the book reading practice with the best use of the latest technology that makes the book readers feel that they are reading a real book. This is done through its e-Ink displays that do not irritate eyes as compared to the lights of traditional mobile phones and devices having LCDs.

The name of Amazon Kindle developed by a branding consultant named Michael Cronan. The meaning of Kindle is ‘to light a fire’. The first kindle was introduced in 2007 and is now at its fifth generation with improvement in every generation.

Generations of Amazon Kindle

Here are the key highlights of the evolution of Amazon Kindle:

  • The first kindle was sold out in 5.5 hours and remained out of stock for the rest of the season.
  • The first device featured a 6 inch display with 250MB internal memory that can hold up to 200 titles.
  • The second generation ofAmazon Kindle was introduced in 2009 and had a text to speech feature. It has the internal memory of 2 GB which can hold up to 1500 titles.
  • In late 2009, a firmware update was released that increased the battery life by 85% and also introduced the PDF support.
  • The international version of Amazon kindle was launched in 2009 that gave access to hundreds of books to download via GSM and 3g network.
  • In 2010, third generation of Amazon Kindle was released with improved e-ink display that has faster refresh rate with improved contrast.
  • The third generation was released in Wi-Fi only and Wi-Fi + 3G versions.
  • The fourth generation of Amazon kindle was launched in the touch screen in 2011 that included web browsing, battery life of 2 months and 4GB internal memory.
  • Amazon announced its 5th generation kindle with the name “Kindle Fire” that is based on android operating system, 7 inch display, 8 GB internal storage and 8 hours of battery life.
  • The latest version of Amazon kindle,  Kindle fire HD is available from 25th October in the united states and comes in the variation of 7 inch and 8.9 inch display with much improved color display and battery life.

E-ink display:

It has a unique electronic ink display screen that reads like ordinary book paper without any backlight. This means that you cannot read a book in the dark. Its lack of glare makes easier for the eyes to avoid any stress on them. No adjustment needed in the bright light or dim light.

Amazon kindle File formats

The propriety format used by Amazon kindle includes AZW and KF8 formats that are designed specifically to read books on the device. Kindle devices does not support epub format. However, the device supports simple text and portable document format (PDF) files.

Through its generations, Amazon kindle was first intended for  reading books which has now transformed to a tablet that has many features to use a apart from simple book reading.
