…..Stretching….jumping…clouded by increased tears, I struggle to hit the buttons needed to connect…falling to my knees I start to sob, defeated by not being able to accomplish this all important task.
I see a shadow emerge from around the corner of the building.
It’s the friendly station attendant that I’ve come to know from coming here with my mother.
As he approaches I am surrounded by a new fear.
What if he tries to stop me? What if he calls my dad? What if I don’t get the call through???
“What is it, Deanna?” He says. “Tell me what is going on.”
Gasping with each word, wiping the tears that are streaming down my face, I choke out the story that I had witnessed.
He rises. Takes hold of the phone handle that is now dangling above my head, and makes the rescue call to “911…”
He gently, calmly, wraps his strong arms around me and tells me to return home immediately and go to my room, assuring me that all would be alright. I believe him, and do as he says.
Back in our attic bedroom, my brothers are still crouched by the small south side window watching the movie clip of our parents unfold. I struggle to find my spot once again… trembling, I wait to see if the rescuers will arrive.
Thunder cracks!!! Fear rushes through my blood! Recounting the call that we had made. The shadows of the old oak tree seem bigger and more fierce now….coming alive with the intensity of my fears.
An eternity passes and then….they are there….
Guns are drawn…screams fill the air from my mother’s desperate voice.
Running toward my father they wrestle him to the ground and secure him with handcuffs. His cursing and threats penetrate my memories of the beatings and threats that he instilled in us daily.
“Why is this happening? I’m so afraid! Where are they taking him? Will I ever see him again? Is Mom ok? Oh Daddy, I’m sorry.”
I feel ashamed. I regret making that call.
The rescuers speak to Mom for a time while the car takes Daddy to an unknown place.
Slowly, quietly my brothers and I creep downstairs. Unsure of what our mother will do, but longing to be assured that all is well.
She opens her arms.
We run into them.
Unleashing sobs of relief, fear, and uncertainty in a gathering of victims that need a reprieve. We comfort each other. Mom is bleeding…
Her makeup has created a design of black valley’s along the length of her face. Her eyes are red and full of sorrow.
A smile comes to her face, offering reassurance.
“Go….go to bed.”
I unwillingly pull myself from the circle of comfort and head toward the stairs to return to the humble lonely spot in the attic…my brothers slowing tailing from behind…
