Moving…Anger….Grandma Ruth…

Restored from the Empower Network archive (2011–2017), lightly edited to meet our current advertising standards. Views are the original author’s.

…We move…

Across town..

Mom is going to the bar “every night.”

Us three kids are in the back seat of the car, asleep, “every night.” The noises of people, doors slamming, with the shadows moving through the night keeps me remembering the event of not long ago. I’m afraid…

We wake each morning…crawl out of the back seat and into the house. Mom is always asleep.

Daddy hasn’t been coming around.

Wonder where he is???? Mom doesn’t know??

We move again..into the house of some family friends.

Daddy and our two other siblings are now with us. Sleeping where ever we land. Pushed outside in the morning until the dusk of the day we entertain ourselves with make believe. Our meals are handed out at the door.

I stand in the window and watch as laughter rings out from inside. Drinking, smoking and cursing inter means with the charade. I long to be part of the laughter…..part of what they are doing…

I tap on the window…which I’ve done many times before in hopes of being welcomed in. I am noticed with a yell, encompassed with threats, from Daddy. I slowly move away…It is always this way.

We move again.

To Idledale, Colorado. My Grandparents home.

Pappy is a gruff fellow. A scowl on this hardened face. A large man. Saying little and placing himself apart from everyone. I’m unsure and frightened by him.

Grandma Ruth is an angel.  A soft spoken woman that is seen on her knees praying at all times of the day.  Displaying the peace of her spirit through whistling with a heavenly song. I adore her.

Mom and Dad come and go. Sometimes together but, mostly not. They never stay long. Angry words are exchanged with Pappy and Daddy on each visit. Grandmother goes to her room to pray.

Why is this happening?? What happened?? Why is Daddy mad?? Will he hit us now? Will he hit Pappy? Where is Mom?

Grandma Ruth takes charge. We go to church each week. Wonderful adventure picnics to the Red Rock Park. Laughter, singing, cooking, and story time every night. Melting into the stories of the Bible with Grandmother as the commentator becomes my favorite time of day. And, prayers. She teaches us to pray.

This becomes the seed that is my comfort, for the rest of my life……
