Where is Guam Located?
I am sure you might have heard of Guam or maybe someone you know was stationed there. I recently returned from Guam and I have been continually asked where is Guam? Guam is a tiny US Territory located in the Pacific Ocean. Guam is where the sun first rises over the United States since it is 14 hours ahead of Eastern Standard time. Thanks to the time difference, you can catch new movies a day earlier than people on the East Coast of the United States and then spoil the ending. Unfortunately, Monday Night Football is actually Tuesday morning football and starts at 11:00am on Tuesday.
Guam lies between 13.2°N and 13.7°N and between 144.6°E and 145.0°E, and has an area of 212 square miles. In comparison, Rhode Island is 1,214 square miles. Guam is located close to the Philippines and about a four hour flight from Japan.
Where is Guam: How to Get There
Just to give you an idea of how far away Guam is from the United States, my flight there took me from Baltimore to Detroit to Japan to Guam and my return flight went from Guam to Hawaii to Chicago to Baltimore. These flights lasted about 23 hours each. It is a long trip.
Where is Guam: Interesting Facts About Guam
Guam’s economy is supported by tourism and the US military. Tourists from Japan flock to Guam to get an American experience without having to travel far. You can find almost every restaurant chain you can think of in Guam. They have a Hard Rock Cafe, California Pizza Kitchen, Taco Bell, T.G.I. Fridays, McDonald’s, Longhorn Steak House, and many more. They also have the World’s largest Kmart.

Speaking of World’s largest. The tallest mountain in the World is located on Guam. Mount Lam Lam is actually taller than Mount Everest when measured from the base to the peak. The base of Mount Lam Lam is located at the bottom of the Marianas Trench. Using this criteria Mount Lam Lam is 38,300 feet and Mount Everest is a puny 29,029 feet tall.
Guam has beautiful beaches and compares favorably to Hawaii in my book.
Where is Guam: What Else is There?
The Navy Base Guam takes up a great portion on the southern point of Guam while Anderson Air Force Base covers a large swath of the northern point of Guam. Both bases have nice beaches and excellent facilities.
The climate is very tropical. It gets hot and humid most of the time with little change in the temperature. The average high temperature is 86 degrees, but I have been then when it has gotten close to 100 degrees and the average low temperature is 76 degrees. The average annual rainfall is a whopping 96 inches. The rainy season is July through November and I can tell you that when I was there in August, it rained almost every single day. Guam is also in Typhoon Alley with the highest risk of typhoons in October and November, but unlike hurricanes they can occur year-round.
Where is Guam: Is a Trip Worth It?
As you can tell, I enjoy going to Guam. There are a great variety of activities to do while you are there. From snorkeling to diving to touring to eating.
The food in Guam is excellent. The local establishments serve some fantastic food. Proa is the best native food restaurant while Jeff’s Pirate Cove is the most fun. The native population are know as Chamarros. Everyone I have met in Guam has been very friendly. The Chamarro food is similar to what you would find in the Philippines with a variety of unique dishes like red rice, and short ribs. There is a great local restaurant called The Jamaican Grill and there are also many excellent Thai and Ramen Noodle joints.
