President Obama, in a rare display of emotion, got teary thanking his campaign staff in Chicago this week.

The President started out talking about his arrival in Chicago as a young man with the idea that he wanted to make a difference, but not really sure how to go about doing that.

Citing his work as a community organizer, the President talked about that period of his life as a great time of learning and growth.

It was a time, he said, where he learned that underneath it all, we share the same hopes and dreams, and where he learned about working on a common endeavor.

The Work That I Did In Those Communities Changed Me More Than I Changed Those Communities

The President made a graceful segue to the present, reflecting on the talents of his campaign staff and the “ripples of hope” they manifested for the future…and it was there that the President started to come undone.

Let’s face it – Barack Obama, the man in need of an “Anger Translator,” the man easily referred to as “No-Drama Obama” – THAT man in tears is going to generate the clicks.

But what about the greater message? What about the young man who wanted to make an impact, but had no idea how?

What about the young man who learned – through service to his community – how to handle adversity, how to handle disappointment, how to work towards a common goal, on a common endeavor?

And what about that man – determined to make a difference – continuing to make a difference – holding onto the hope of a brighter future for all as the torch by which the darkest days have been lit?

What about that man – humbled and brought to tears by the fact that so many people have worked so hard on his behalf, validating his good works with great works of their own?

THAT is what I think has gone viral! Not that “No-Drama Obama” gets emotional, but the beauty of hope and belief and the validation of good works by great works, or great works by good.

You know, EVERYONE can make a difference – whether by spending more time with loved ones, volunteering in your community, or contributing – financially, physically, spiritually or emotionally to things that matter to you. But most of us don’t because we think we can’t afford to.
