Life Direction From A Deer

Restored from the Empower Network archive (2011–2017), lightly edited to meet our current advertising standards. Views are the original author’s.

My sister hit a deer on her way to work this morning. (No animals were harmed in the events that transpired. In fact, the deer really hit HER!) Talk about unexpected contingencies! Now I’m not the one who has to deal with the car repairs and insurance and all the other frustrations of an accident like that, but a crazy realization hit me as I was driving her to work.

I was happy.

It really felt like the best thing that could have happened to me this morning. And that caught me off guard.

I mean, if you’re like me, you don’t mind helping out family and friends when they need you. But it still can throw a wrench in your day. There’s just some added stress that you take on to rearrange your life and schedule to help somebody out. Sometimes you roll with the punches and sometimes it really irks you.

Either way, I’ve never actually felt thrilled. But this morning I was and I had to figure out why.

Of course, the answer was in the question. It was a confirmation of my WHY.

Have You Discovered YOUR Why?

In order to have true success, you have to be emotionally connected to why you do what you do. We see this in all great and influential leaders. Yet the majority of people cannot clearly communicate this, especially in terms of their business.

(By the way, your why cannot be “to make money”. That’s only a result. Working for a paycheck does not create abundant life. Working for passion does.)

Ask yourself these questions.

  • What is my purpose?
  • What is my cause?
  • What is my belief?
  • Why did I get out of bed this morning?
  • Why should anyone care?

Why Are You Here?

Okay. I know “here” can mean all kinds of things. But I’m not talking philosophy or physics today. Just really ask yourself that question…whatever it means to you. This is the basis of goal setting. Why are you here?

…unless you have HUGE EMOTIONAL REASONS behind those goals that drive you to the point of OBSESSION…

…there’s very little chance you’ll actually hit it.

The WHY behind the goal is just as important as the goal itself.

Answer it on paper, and once you have, keep it updated and truly embedded in your mind. Then when you hit those inevitable bumps in the road, you’ll have the true motivation that leads to unwavering tenacity that will propel you forward.

For me, one of the whys of my business is time freedom specifically for my family. It’s a luxury to me to have had the time to spend with my grandma during her last days, to be available to run an errand for my parents or take my sister to work. That freedom is one of the most important things to me, a luxury I don’t ever want to live without. So my business model reflects that.

Is your business built on your passion? Do you truly know your raison d’être? When you’re living it, you’ll relish it. And you’ll be happy when your sister hits a deer.
