A woman approaches Ivan in the queue at a London business event, asks whether he is prepared for the day, and what follows becomes an essay on modern manners that he expects will cost him subscribers. He published it anyway, and it is the most interesting writing on the blog precisely because he can see the risk while writing.

The other piece to read is a grief post. His aunt has died, the last of five siblings, and he writes about a childhood of visits to a house ten minutes away and the shock when they moved a hundred miles south.

Carole and Ivan write about business too, on an advertising programme they belonged to and on a search algorithm change that rearranged everybody's traffic overnight.

There is a diary from a trip to Atlanta and a note about national debt drawn from a speaker they follow.

Read the manners post first. It shows you the kind of people writing, and everything else reads better afterwards.
