What is Qi?

Restored from the Empower Network archive (2011–2017), lightly edited to meet our current advertising standards. Views are the original author’s.

Qi or Chi (pronounced Chee) is the chinese name for vital energy or life force. Qi has many other names that come from different cultures. In India it is called Prana, in Japan it is called Ki and in many western culture it is simply known as Vital Energy.

What is Qi? What does Qi do?

Qi is the life force all around us and inside our bodies. Basically there are a few different types of Qi. There is Universal Qi (often referred to as heavenly qi, cosmic qi or cosmic energy), there is Earth Qi and there is Bodily Qi. Our bodily Qi is a combination of universal qi and earth qi.

Qi gives us life! Qi gives us the ability to move, feel and think. It is the animating force in our bodies and in life all around us!

We each are born with certain levels of Qi in our bodies that is inherited from our parents, but qi can be cultivated and made stronger.

We can get Qi through the food that we eat, the water we drink and the air that we breathe.

But to truly cultivate Qi so that we can use it effectively for ourselves we need to practice arts such as Qigong and Meditation!’

Check out 30 Benefits of Qigong here

Through Qigong and Meditation we can absorb more qi into our bodies and we can learn to control qi through the direction of our minds.

This is why most people do not believe in Qi. They do not believe as their mind is weak and closed off. They do not know how to use their mind at all!

So how do we open the mind and experience Qi??

We have to let go! We have to let go of all our worries, doubts and all our emotions. We have to relax the body and naturally clear our mind from any thought. We do this by focusing on our breathing.

Breathing is the most important bodily function. We cannot live without breathing.

If you think about it, How long can you go without sleeping?

How long can you go without eating?

How long can you go without water?

How long can you go without air?

Not very long! A matter of minutes! (if that)

Just close your eyes focusing on your breathing. Breathe in deeply and breathe out slowly. Breathe in and out through your nose and breathe all the way down to your lower stomach. This is called the Dan Tian and this is often referred to as the “Sea of Qi”.

Focus on your Dan Tian and relax your body and let go of all thoughts.

If you do this correctly you will start to feel more and more relaxed after every breath and you may start to feel some light pulsing in your palms, some warmth/heat, you may even feel tiny vibrations. This is QI! This is what’s running through your body just like blood and oxygen!

Learning how to connect with Qi and learning how to direct it can have many benefits. Qi can be cultivated to keep your mind, body and spirit strong and in harmony. There are some amazing things out there that you can achieve through the cultivation and training of your Qi.

Qi is Life! Qi is all around us! We can use this Qi, concentrate it, to make our mind, body and spirit strong and healthy. Learn to connect with Qi and your life will never be the same. Good luck on your journey. Thank you for reading this post.
