Apple is generally in the business of computers and smart phones; however, they have started making leeway into a new market of consumers. Television is quickly becoming tied directly to computers. You can play a movie you downloaded on your TV. You can see things in high definition and use internet browsing to watch videos on YouTube and Hulu. With the internet and television becoming so closely linked, Apple is slowly sneaking their way into the market.
New Apple TV
Apple brand receivers come from a desire famous founder Steve Jobs had to ‘revolutionize the television industry’. Apple started off their grab for the market with a receiver that you can use to browse the internet on your television..
Apple initially started with a television receiver service in April of 2006. It was designed to allow users to rent movies and TV shows through iTunes and YouTube. In 2010, Netflix jumped on board and began offering their movies and television shows through a subscription service linked to Apple.
Apple TV is currently in the third generation, with its most recent release in March of 2012. This resulted in even more video compatibility and storage space. The TV continues to work off of WiFi receivers. On thing that Apple TV has always lacked is its ability to get into local programming. In the past, they haven’t done as well traditional TV providers as most of the items viewed were pay per view items.
This morning, a rumor was reported that Intel may be partnering up with Apple TV to revolutionize the industry. Intel has the technology to deliver cable content through a smart set top box. This would allow the viewer to stream local programming by subscription.
Apple and Intel – New Apple TV
If Apple does partner up with Intel, this could seriously increase demand for Apple TV. One of Apple’s largest failing points was that it couldn’t provide sporting events that draw major viewers. However, with Intel’s help, this would be a possibility.
The possibilities for Apple in the television market are endless. With the technology they already have, they could create a voice commanded TV. They could make television more user-friendly and easily searchable.
Most people who buy from Apple own more than one Apple device. In the past, the Apple TV was not taken seriously because of its limitations. However, based on the loyal brand following they already have, if Apple were able to partner with a company so they could provide basic cable access as part of Apple TV, they might just be able to take over a large portion of that market in 2013.
In fact, most business analysts believe that is the way Apple will go. In 2013 and 2014, most business people watching Apple expect to see them make a grasp at a piece of the television industry by partnering up with a basic cable provider. Intel might just be the company to make it happen.
