Some folks immediately think there is a problem with Multi-Level Marketing MLM and Network Marketing as they do not believe it is a true business model; this article will help understand what the real problem is and give you a solution as well.
There exist extreme positive and negative views on the issue of multi-level MLM and network marketing. Some people, including top celebrity authors, such as Mark Victor Hansen, Robert Allen, and Robert Kiyosaki are extremely passionate about it and are even doing it. On the other hand, mentioning that to friends, family and even business colleagues that you do network marketing in many circles, can be as bad as declaring yourself a leper.
The Problem With Network Marketing And MLM
One possibility that comes to most peoples minds is its pyramid structure; though this cannot be the real problem because most of large sales organizations have adopted the tiered compensation structure used by MLM and internet marketing. Another possibility is that you have to pay an initial fee to participate. This cannot be the issue because it’s a standard franchising model that has been used for a long time.
Multi-Level MLM and Network Marketing are also mistaken as “Ponzi”, or illegal pyramid schemes where people make money by signing up other people, while there are little or no actual products being sold. The fact remains that companies such as Amway, Meleleuca, Excel, USANA, PrePaid Legal, and others have sold products worth millions to willing customers, who are not part of MLM.
Thus, the above perceptions are out of line with the reality, though I have to admit that the MLM’ers bad reputation goes deeper than just being occasional Ponzi schemes.
The actual problem with MLM is not the business model itself, but some of the people involved. Network marketing is just a “micro-franchising business model that has a benefit of very low capital investment, with the potential for outstanding returns, with numerous people achieving this. The possibility of little capital investment and great returns within a short time attract, inexperienced marketers, people who are not ready to become business owners and others who:
– Have failed in their own careers and business and have little cash to invest
— Have no previous sales experience
– Have no experience running or owning a business
– Need a better source of income
– Have limited experience in developing fruitful business relationships.
– Have unrealistic expectations; they perceive MML as get rich quick scheme.
There is nothing wrong with above factors being the source of motivation. Moreover, they describe a minority number of MLM/network marketers but it significant enough to tarnish the reputation of the rest. These network marketers end up:
>> Over-selling the opportunity
>> Coming out as desperate
>> Discussing business inappropriately e.g. in social situations
>> Being either deceptive or inaccurate
>> Focus more on new recruits and end up neglecting the existing customers
