Are you a ‘clock watcher’ at work?

Have you called into work with the ‘fake’ sick excuse?

Are you tired of the grind or creating someone else’s dream?

Or maybe you don’t want to be a corporate robot anymore like I once was?

Well Guess What?

Sounds like it is time to quit your 9 to 5 job!

BUT WAIT!

Not so fast…

It would be awesome to call your boss or walk into their office to announce proudly, “I quit” except you better make sure you have all your ducks in a row before you do.

What’s The Real Reason To Quit

You can’t just quit and you probably know that.  So understanding what the real reason   Take some time to reflect on all the things that have been gnawing at you to leave your job.

Are you frustrated with things that you might be able to rectify?  For example, ask your boss for that raise, or taking an extra week vacation could be ways that might get you back on track.  Was there a promotion you didn’t get that you might just need to take on a couple of projects to catch your boss’s eye?

OR MAYBE… you are ready to call it quits with your job because you are ready for a change!

Factor in everything that you think might be reasons to leave your 9 to5.  Weigh your reasons carefully and then next step is to know if you can financially quit or make a change.

Can You Afford To Quit

Today, most families live on a two person salary.  That means both mom and dad or both spouses are working, and usually working to make ends meet. It also means parents with kids are having to drop off kids to daycare.

Take your monthly expenses, everything, from the gas you pay for when commuting to work, the daycare costs, lunches, parking costs and anything else that you pay for now to ‘go to work’, these are your work related costs.  Next, add all your monthly bills such as mortgage, rent, utilities, maintenance and any other costs your household pays.

These numbers can now be analyzed.  If you were to subtract your work related costs and salary, would the remaining salary be enough to live on until you started earning an income from another source?

Things to consider, especially if you are REALLY ready to quit your 9 to 5 job is to ‘cut back’.  Do you really need the extra channels on your cable subscription, can you get by for a while with one car, especially should you decide to work from home (we will get to that later!)  You can make small changes to cut back like, start making coffee at home instead of visiting your local coffee shop on a daily basis.  These are all things that add up and can help you to get out of that grind, so you can pursue your passion.

What Would You Do If You Quit Your 9 to 5 Job?

DECISION TIME!  Looking back during my ‘corporate robot’ days, I remember looking out my office window wondering if this is what life was all about.  Was I suppose to live life like this until I retire?  And was I going to have a retirement fund big enough when that day comes?

These are all things that many people think about but really never take seriously enough so they can make a decision.

You see….it isn’t about your job, it isn’t about the money…it’s about the quality of life.  How do you want to live your life?  And are you ready to make a change to have more freedom, more time and to be able to do what you want, instead of fulfilling someone else’s dream, or filling up someone else’s bank account?

There are many options for you to consider, but first let’s start with what are you’re passionate about.

  • Do you love to do something that you can’t do right now because you are going to work?
  • Do you want to be your own boss and create your own income?
  • Do you see yourself living differently than you are living today?
  • Do you want something different for your family?

These questions should open your mind to what’s possible.  Next, have a discussion with your spouse who may or may not be supportive at first.  They may think you are crazy!

But guess what?  When you go from an employee mindset to an entrepreneur lifestyle I would say, we are a bit different than most people, in a good way!

So let’s talk about this ‘work from home’ thing!

Have a serious sit down talk with yourself.  Because there are many things to consider before you jump off and quit your 9 to 5 job and start a work from home business.  You have to know yourself really well to have some confidence, maybe not a ton of confidence at first, because we are human.  Making changes, especially when it comes to your lively hood is tough.

So be honest with yourself.  Are you really the kind of person that will take working from home, starting an online business seriously?  Will you work every day, be open to learning new things, new skills and take action to start getting results?  Do you have the determination to do whatever it takes, burning the midnight oil for the next 60, 90 days or even for the next year or two?

Did I scare ya?!!

Seriously…understanding that making a change while it is just a decision away…it always will require your attention, your complete dedication and determination to whatever it is that you choose… and you WILL succeed.  That there are no Plan B or C, because you need, want and will make the income your family and your future lifestyle deserves.

Now to mention starting a work from home business, online business because it is something that almost anyone can get started in, even if you have little or no experience with online marketing.  It is an industry that is growing very quickly because know-how is not required.  Just your passion and desire to learn and earn!

Of course, there are so many other work from home businesses that are available to you and this would be something you would want to spend time researching and determine what is best for you and your goals.

I know you can quit your 9 to 5 job…just be sure the numbers and the time are right.

Know in your heart and in your mind that you are ready.

Then take that leap of faith.  Nothing is stopping you except you.  Of course, don’t do something that will put yourself and your family into the poor house.  That is why knowing if the timing is right to quit your 9 to 5 job requires thoughtful action.  You will be challenged to get out of that comfort zone.  But you will also be rewarded once you make that decision and go for your dreams!

You want to know if you are ‘cut out’ to work from home, to be a successful online entrepreneur?  Go through this Level Up Sequence to see if you qualify…this will help you BIG TIME before you make that decision to quit your 9 to 5 job and start your work from home online business!

  1. Lynn, thanks for all truth in this great post . We would all love to work from home but it’s hard work just as working 9-5 is .. I chuckled at burning the midnight oil… So many of us out there are doing that to have lifestyle freedom . Thanks Lynn

  2. Awesome post Lynn! Many people want to quit their 9-5 jobs but taking that 1st step…leap of faith…is sometime difficult. Having the right mindset, self-confidence, and the “no matter what it takes” attitude is key.
Love this great post! Thanks so much for sharing!

  3. This is an excellent post Lynn!
People really need to take some time to look at their situation and their options, because there are people that quit a bit to soon!
…But Lynn here wrote a map for all you guys!!
    Thanks,
    – Nestor

  4. This is so true, Lynn. Being honest with ourself and you know it is scary to get out of your comfort zone and quit your 9 – 5 job. I think to a lot of people it means that even if they don’t perform, they still get a pay check and that makes it hard to let go. But, like what you said, to a lot of us entrepreneurs that is not quality of life. It takes courage to be an entrepreneur and some times people just don’t have it.

  5. Great post. You have many valid points to consider before quitting your 9 to 5 job. For me I didn’t get to make the choice I was layed off. But I am determined to not get another one. But for those who are looking to make a choice, great points.

  6. Thanks Rosanna, and yes, a lot of midnights and beyond, it’s that ‘whatever it takes’ attitude, the intent to win as I say! Appreciate you sharing your thoughts.

  7. Appreciate that Sherry! and yes, you make good points, especially having the right attitude. Thanks for sharing!

  8. Thanks Nestor…and you make a good point as well. Some folks do throw in the towel too soon, so understanding those options, as you say, is key. Appreciate the input!

  9. So true Showleh, becoming and growing as an entrepreneur is not for everyone. But then many folks don’t realize that the ‘paycheck’ is not security at all, it is something that is dictating their life, day in and day out. Really appreciate your sharing your insight today Showleh, thanks!

  10. Sometimes being let go from the company is a sign that change is what you really wanted. So I’m glad to hear your determination Deirdre and thank you for sharing your comments.

  11. Thanks Helen, and i think many folks will see themselves in this post, one way or another. Appreciate your comments.

  12. I think most folks would like to quit the 9 to 5. But it’s like you say, one must stop and think about if they are the type of person to do what has to be done while they still have a job. It takes commitment. It’s very possible and one must decide this is what they want and make new habits.

  13. Very true Roland, it takes a decision and commitment which many folks don’t do because of fear, which is really only a lack of self-belief, which can be overturned by being open to learning and developing the skills to work from home. Really appreciate your input on this!
