Shakira Abdul-Ali

Black economic development gets a serious, sustained treatment here, across an eight part review of one comprehensive proposal for building enterprise inside Black communities. That review is the reason to visit, because almost nobody in this corner of the internet takes the subject on at that length.

Shakira Abdul-Ali connects it to a wider argument about participation. One post asks why so many Americans who say they believe in free enterprise never vote, and answers with the numbers rather than with irritation.

Her personal development writing avoids the usual shapes. She writes about seven year cycles in a life and what each one tends to demand, about discovering a purpose in steps rather than in a flash, and about the discipline Ramadan teaches somebody who observes it.

Anniversaries give her prompts: a lunar new year, an international women's day, a tribute to a mayor who spent a life on social justice.

Start with the economic development review. It is a course, not a post.
