‘Kick Ass’ Movie Review: The Best Comic Book Movie Period

I just had to do a ‘Kick Ass’ movie review; seriously, this is the best comic book movie… PERIOD! I might have some comic geeks try and bust my balls on that one, but before you do, I just want you to understand something:
I’m a comic book geek too
I have over 4,000 comic books. I still collect them when I have time, and I know more about origin stories and hero background than 99.5% of people on the planet. I do have to be honest though…
…I know that ‘Kick Ass’ was a graphic novel by Mark Millar before it was a movie. This is a rare case where I saw the movie, and have not read the comic book. Therefore, I apologize if there is a fellow comic nerd out there who read the graphic novel first, and is pissed about the technicalities.
However, I am confident that it is at least a fairly good adaptation due to the fact that Mark Millar also worked on the movie version of ‘Kick Ass.’
Seriously, just watch the trailer; It speaks for itself(but does give away a lot of the movie, so if you want to be surprised, you might want to skip it).
‘Kick Ass’ HD Movie Trailer:
Before I get into Kick Ass, let’s talk for a minute about the comic book movies that were actually really good(these are in no order of ranking):
- Captain America
- Iron Man 1
- Wolverine(I know I’ll have some haters on this one, but I’m sticking to it; I know it had some problems, but it was good)
- Batman Begins
- Sin City
- 300
There are probably some others that should make that list, but I would have to think about it. Most of the other comic epics were entertaining, but lacked a lot of elements that would satisfy a nerd like myself.
For Instance Spider-man 3:
I was really excited about this movie because it had some of my favorite villains. I thought it was going to be packed full of awesome fight scenes, and Venom footage. Instead, they turned the whole thing into a crappy love story, barely had any footage of Venom, and killed him off at the end.
To make things worse, the end fight scene was a joke. Spider-man isn’t invulnerable. If Sandman beat the crap out him with 5o tons of sand and concrete for five minutes, yes, he might survive…
…but he would have been stuck in the hospital for 3-6 weeks if he managed to escape.
What a load of crap.
Anyways, sorry for the tangent, we were talking about ‘Kick Ass.’ This movie feeds every comic nerds dream that we can go out there, buy some tights, and become a crime fighting bad ass. I’m not even going to get into the details of the movie, I’m just going to tell you that if you like comic movies, and you okay with extensive graphic violence and swearing, you should watch it.
No, ‘Kick Ass’ doesn’t have the best special effects of all the comic movies, and depending on what you are looking for, there is a strong argument that some of the other films are better(hell, in the right mood, I’d rather watch Captain America or Iron Man).
This is simply a movie that could almost actually happen, its well written, has great filming, epic fight scenes, and it makes you want to go out there, buy a pair of tights, and kick some ass.
- ‘Big Daddy,’ ‘Kick Ass,’ and ‘Red Mist’
It has tons of really bloody scenes, and it is definitely more of an ‘Adult’ comic book movie, but it is seriously fucking awesome. I actually haven’t watched it in several months, I’m getting excited just writing about it, and I think I’m going to have to see it again tonight.
Bottom Line: ‘Kick Ass’ is an epic movie
I’d love to hear your thoughts, Comment Below.
