And then of course, the whole issue is,

.. “I tried, it didn’t work” or ..

.. “how long is it going to take?” and so what they want oftentimes is, they want to be able to say..

.. “I forgive you and that settles it”

It’s one thing to say it, it’s something else to experience it in your heart.

And you can tell in a few moments as we talk about this, it is very evident when you have genuinely forgiven somebody and when you have not.

And so as you think about some of these, you might ask yourself.. “Is that my attitude? Is that the way I feel?” And one of the things that a person might do oftentimes to avoid genuinely forgiving is this…

… they will think about the situation, what that person said or what they did, then they’ll say “They probably didn’t mean that.” or “It was probably a mistake.”

If you justify somebody else’s wrong to you, in order to not face forgiveness, then you are still enslaved by an unforgiving spirit! And I am going to show you in a minute how unforgiveness is a very very dangerous thing.

… it affects all your relationships..

… it affects you physically.

Listen to this passage of scripture.. you’ve heard the Lord’s Prayer many many times, at least that is the pattern prayer, really. Jesus has just taught how to pray, and then He comes down to the last part:

12 ‘And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13 ‘And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.’

14 For if you forgive others for their transgressions, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive others, then your Father will not forgive your transgressions. – Matthew 6:12-15

This is a conditional sentence, watch this carefully…

14 For if you forgive others for their transgressions, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive others, then your Father will not forgive your transgressions. – Matthew 6:14-15

That makes it one of the most critical statements in the bible. If you forgive those who wrong you, the Father will forgive you, if you refuse to forgive those who wrong you, the Father will refuse to forgive you.

Let’s clarify something.

This is not referring to salvation. The bible says:

8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9 not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. – Ephesians 2: 8-9

We are not talking about salvation, we are talking about our spirit towards someone else, our willingness to forgive someone else for what they have done. Think about this for a moment, because people read this, and people just read right over it.. so let’s make it clearer…
