Try the GPS approach to achieving your dreams

I’ll be honest. Before MapQuest I couldn’t find my way down the block. Granted, before I heard about MapQuest I was still in grade school, but the advent of software being able to guide you across the nation, turn-by-turn, is an amazing innovation. It’s led to people taking the GPS approach to getting anywhere around the world, especially if you want to kayak across the Pacific Ocean!

“I can’t even use the GPS approach to get to the nearest McDonalds!”

You don’t need to be able to navigate yourself across the street to use the GPS approach to get to your destination in life.

Now, some GPS’s will give different routes to get from point A to point B. Some GPS’s look nicer than others. Some GPS’s will put a dent in your wallet. But they’re all meant to take you from point A to point B. That’s the GPS approach, in a nutshell.

So how does the GPS approach apply to your life? Well, first, ask yourself where you want to go. Then figure out who you need to be in order to get there.

Find someone who already has gone to where you want to go, and try to emulate them. Ask them to mentor you. If they don’t want to mentor you, move on and find someone who will.

If they start mentoring you, follow their instructions! If you’ve hired a personal trainer and want to lose weight, follow their diet! Follow their work-out routine! Don’t binge on candy bars and blame your weight on your inept personal trainer! Granted, a good personal trainer will be able to motivate you to take action, but that’s not why you should blame your lack of success on the personal trainer!
