Who Says You Are Insignificant?

Restored from the Empower Network archive (2011–2017), lightly edited to meet our current advertising standards. Views are the original author’s.

You Are Insignificant?  Who says so?

There are two schools of thought. One teaches that you are insignificant in the scheme of life. You are encouraged to practice humility and humbleness, which is fine, but they go further than that. They use the obtuse assertion that you are simply insignificant and unworthy. You are a sinner who God will punish unless you hire a middleman to broker a deal with God. They preach that God is separate from you. Or, they may not even believe in any God.

The second school of thought teaches you the opposite—that you are an embodiment of God.

What is wrong with the first mode of belief is that you have a propensity to behave according to what your belief system is about yourself. If you are told over and over and over again, that you a sinner, and that you were created by sin (through that repulsive thing–sex), you will have guilt as the centerpiece of your life. With guilt comes shame, fear, denial of your worth, and that belief system will perpetuate more actions on your part that will live up to your self-image that you are insignificant, unworthy, inconsequential, whose life has no meaning or importance.

There are stories about a saint who noticed that when a devotee had a lot of pride and ego, he would reprimand that devotee and call them “bleep” to get rid of their pride. Words directed by an enlightened master, even in false “anger”, have the power to transform you on the spot, so his words, whether kind or cruel do the same thing. They transform. We are not talking about that here.

We are talking about teachers who talk about insignificance as your reality. We believe that the complete opposite is true! You are beautiful, wonderful, magnificent, exceptional and fine. How could you possibly not be? You are a manifestation of the Great Creator. You were created in God’s image; therefore, you possess the same qualities as the Creator. Only a banyan tree can grow from a banyan seed. A banyan seed will not produce an apple, no matter how much anyone wants it to. It can only create an image (existence) of it’s own self. Likewise, you are the image of the Creator in all this glory and majesty.

You are a microcosm of the macrocosm. This does not mean you are “small”. This means your body temple and the Universe contain identical shakti, identical energy.  If you went to the ocean and scooped up a cup of the water, the water in the cup is no different from the water in the ocean.  So you are no different from God. Instead of thinking of yourself as “insignificant”, remember the Lord dwells within. Jesus and Tukaram Maharaj both said, “My father and I are One”.  Muktananda said, “God dwells within you as you.”

Thinking yourself equal to God does not mean you have a big ego. God does not have an ego. It means you have surrendered your big ego, the ego of the jiva, individual, to the truth of your magnificence. You have inherited the greatness and power of the great egoless “I”, the benefactor of your incarnation. This “I” is the spiritual “I” that you should be referring to every time you say “I this” and “I that”

Charles Haanel in his book, “The Master Key System” has a wonderful affirmation that he used. When he said “I”, he was talking about the great spiritual “I”, not the ego.  By repeating these words, you are relating yourself to the Almighty. I have come to love these words:

I am whole, perfect, strong, powerful, loving, harmonious, and happy.

So big deal, what difference does it make? It makes a lot of difference. These are notjust words you mouth. As with all great mantras, unless you know what you are saying and why you are saying it, they won’t work.  Even though these words are easy and you think you know what they mean, they won’t work unless you have a spiritual understanding, jnana, of the energy behind the words.

God is Whole (so are you). He did not create just a tenth of you. He created every part of you as you are. He made you whole. He is whole, so you are whole.

God is Perfect (so are you). Your imperfections are seen through the ego lens. If you stop and think of the perfection and order of this Universe, it is nothing short of awesome. Indescribable.  Consider some of the things we take for granted– the way the sun rises in the east every morning, the setting of the sun, the perfect order of the stars and planets, the seas ebb and flow, the seasons that never fail to arrive at the right time. The Universe is not chaotic. It is perfect. Look at your body and how it operates on default. The eyes see, the ears hear, the heart beats in perfect rhythm, legs move and take you where you want to go, your hair grows, you have eyebrows to protect your eyes from the sun, food digests and eliminates without any orders from you. All perfect. Your little world (your body) operates with the same order and perfection of the Universe.

God is Strong (so are you). Take a look at the earth. You see and feel God’s strength everyday in the winds, the water, the rain, the lightning, the trees, and the seas. Do you not see his resilience and ability to transform? For example, plants that will only grow after a forest fire. This takes strength. God is never depressed, or gives up or says, “The heck with this”. God has courage, strength, energy, and so do you.

God is Powerful (so are you). You have seen her hurricanes, her fiery energy, her ability to adapt, change, and transform. You also have within you the latent power to manifest good health, money, love, and everything you want. From nothing, you can become something. You have the power, persistence, and determination and will to do, to speak, to think, to move, to live, to love. Do it.

God is Loving (so are you). God provided a cure for every possible dis-ease on this planet with compassion and love. She loves unconditionally. Her love is everywhere, but our limited vision prevents us from seeing beyond our peripheral vision, and we feel a lack of love, so we unable to give love. Her beautiful blossoms kiss you everyday; do you see them? Her leaves fan your soul; do you feel them? She is generous, she gives from her heart. That is love. You are born from her love. You are love too.

God is Harmonious (so are you). Have you seen the green foliage against the canvas of the blue sky, wrapping around with the melodies of the breeze? Have you heard the sounds of nature striking a progression of chords in perfect rhythm? Have you noticed how rainbows bridge over land and sea, nursing the entire plant and animal kingdom with subtle hues? Can’t you see, feel, and hear nature’s harmony everywhere in the outer world? Your inner world works in perfect harmony too. Look for it. It is there. Jesus said, “Seek and ye shall find”.

God is Happy (so are you). God looked at his creation and was pleased. He felt a sense of contentment and satisfaction just like you feel when you accomplish something worthwhile. This is the feeling of “happy” that perpetuates more circumstances and situations that bring about even “more” happiness. This is the Law of Attraction. You can also find joy by the simple practice of having gratitude for everything that you have right now… as it is.

Get rid of any thoughts of insignificance. And with humility, have gratitude for the life that you have. It is a blessing and honor to have received this body for the enjoyment of the “I”.

Do not allow anyone to preach to you that you are insignificant. If you remember from whence you came, you will be alive with the knowing that you are Shiva, You are That! You are Divine!
