My Halloween Memories

Growing up in my hometown in Michigan, I always looked forward to Halloween.

All of us kids did really.

It was a day to stuff ourselves with candy and wear costumes to school.

I have Halloween memories of those school parties being an absolute blast because we did nothing all day.

Such Excitement!

I would plan my costumes weeks in advance.

Once I got to be around 8 years old, I started making my own costumes.  The ones in the stores were pretty crappy.

One of my favorite Halloween memories, and I think my most successful effort, was the

Halloween Memories

year I went as a Disco Duck. I wish I had a photo, but I had these HUGE sunglasses…duck shoes and stripped tube socks…that is about all that I can remember.

Actually, I remember I had wanted flippers, but it got exhausting trying to walk in them so I switched to my duck shoes.

My mom always thought the duck shoes were ugly…but they fit quite well with this costume and were a great alternative to the flippers.

Halloween Memories of Trick-or-Treating at Night!

Another one of my Halloween memories was that in my town, we also trick-or-treated from 6pm-8pm.

That was it.

Just two hours.

I am still stunned by the cities that have day long trick-or-treating…like Chicago.

They trick or treat all day!

No Joke…

All Day Long!!

Man are they lucky.

I can only imagine how much loot I would have had if I had all day to trick-or-treat.

So right about now…about 9:00 in the evening…. my parents would be going through my bag of goodies!

Dad would steal my jelly beans.

And my mom would tell me I could only have 3 pieces.

THEN she would put the bag on the top of the refrigerator.

Like really?

I snuck candy out of that bag all day and night!

But I guess you can’t blame her for trying…I did (and still do) have a wicked sweet tooth.

Halloween Memories of My Last Trick-or-Treat

I was about 21…maybe 22.

AND

I went as a BABY!

DON’T LAUGH… it’s not as bad as it’s sounds.

I actually took my little cousin and decided to dress up too.

I must admit I was more than a little embarrassed going up to the doors.

Clearly, I had aged-out of this tradition a long time ago.

But still it was fun!

But, prior to that…my last trick-or- treating excursion was when I was in 8th grade!

My last hurrah!

I really cleaned up too!

I dressed as a tennis player.

NOT very original at all considering I played tennis everyday.

But hey…by then I was out of ideas and just in it for the candy.

(I always like the Black-Jacks..they’re like black and pink taffy…but I haven’t seen those around in a long time.)

And wearing tennis shoes helped me cover more ground more quickly…so hey.. it worked out quite well.

I had way more candy than any one person should be allowed to eat.

And I wasn’t.

My mom still tried to hide the bag.

She did move it from the refrigerator.

But it didn’t matter.

I had the nose of a bloodhound when it came to sniffing out candy.

And when no one was looking…I’d happily unwrap candy bar after candy bar.

I have to say, I really have some very fond Halloween memories.
