Keeping Your Head Together While Dealing with Negative People

Ever run into people who can never seem to get it together? Like no matter how many different ways you try to help them, they always complain, point fingers and NEVER take a look in the mirror.

Negative People

I ran into a couple of those negative people today. This afternoon, I followed up with somebody who had reached out to me for help.  This person had been whining to me for more than a week about the state of their business, or the lack of business. Now, I listened to this person. I understood where they were coming from. I really did. I shared a lot this person’s frustration at one point. So over the course of several days, I offered a few suggestions on what they could do to move forward.

It all seemed to fall on deaf ears. No matter what I said, this person never actually heard any of it. The complaints and rebuttals came flying out of their mouth before I could even finish making my point. I was sitting there thinking “well, you’re way isn’t working. Maybe it’s time to consider some new methods.” As this person rattled off excuse after excuse as to why my suggestions wouldn’t work…and it all came down to being cheap, I might add…I couldn’t help but think, why are you calling me?

Quickly Identify When Dealing with Negative People

The truth is, some people really just don’t want help. Sometimes negative people are happy being negative people. They just want someone to listen to them complain and join them in their pity party.  Listen to me here: DON’T BE THAT PERSON!!

The road to success is hard enough when things are going great. But letting negative influences invade your space will only make it harder. Even if it’s someone you are trying to help.

I realized something as I was listening to this person talk.  Not only were they trying to talk themselves out of accomplishing something, they were trying to talk me out of it too! A few more rounds of that conversation and I would have been ready to quit!

And that’s just not happening.

Say ‘Goodbye’ to Negative People

It’s amazing how quickly negative thoughts and a ‘can’t  do’ mindset can spread. If you’re not careful, they’ll have you believing the same load of garbage that is keeping them down. And let’s face it, you can’t be of any help to anybody else if you allow someone else’s negative thoughts to take you down and steal your dream.

Sometimes the best thing you can do for someone is to resist the urge to help them. Sometimes you just have to wait it out until they are in a more receptive place to hear advice and guidance. And sometimes, that day will never come.

When dealing with negative people, the best thing you can do is keep your head together. It may mean removing yourself from the situation. But you have your own path to follow and there is no time to deal with “negative people.”
