Why Is Story Bumping On Facebook Important For Your Business?

Story Bumping IS important to you and your business!

Facebook’s Story Bumping will get more people’s eye on your posts on Facebook.

In this article I will explain story bumping, recently introduced to Facebook’s EdgeRank as an update.

Let’s start with how Facebook uses EdgeRank…

The posts that you publish on Facebook get shown in priority in the newsfeed of the people who like, comment and share your posts most. It is a weighted formula that has been referred to as a magic spell of sorts

The intended goal is to show people the posts that they are most likely to want to see.

Someone who likes, comments and shares many of your posts will see more of your content at the top of your news feed. Any of your followers or friends on Facebook who do not interact on any of your posts will see little to none of your posts or they will at least be farther down in their news feed.

Story Bumping on Facebook is an update to their EdgeRank algorithm. A post that has been posted earlier in the day, has popularity with likes, comments and shares will be bumped to the top of your news feed if you just came onto Facebook.

Here is how TechCrunch describes Facebook Story Bumping and some test results:

With Story Bumping, Facebook doesn’t just look at what stories have been published since you last looked at the feed, but at all the recent stories you hadn’t seen — not just “new” but “new to you”. This way you see more relevant stories, even if they’re a little bit older.

Facebook has rolled Story Bumping out on the web and is starting to push it to mobile. Initial tests showed the Story Bumping led to 5% more likes, comments, and shares on stories from friends, an 8% boost in interactions for stories from Pages and public figures, and an increase from 57% of potentially visible stories read to 70%. People are reading a larger fraction of their stories thanks to this algorithm change.

Facebook says that these changes and more will be discussed and updated in Facebook For Business Blog Posts

It is important to stay up to date on how Social Media including Facebook sets up your newsfeed. Understanding what and having a sense of what they are optimizing for will help you adapt your posting.
