Dogs are pets that are beloved and owned by many people. Young animals like puppies are known for being mischievous and sometimes destructive. Read this article to learn how you can train your dog.

Be sure that your canine is consuming a healthy diet. It is entirely up to you to provide a good diet for your pet. Without proper nutrition, your dog’s general health will suffer and there may also be direct effects on behavior. A proper diet can affect how well they react to training.

When you are in the initial stages of training your puppy, teach him his name first to help create a bond. Use his name frequently, and train him to come to you when called. It is a good idea to have your puppy learn these words first. It’s important to spend a lot of time playing with your puppy, this will help your puppy get to know you and learn to trust you. This way he or she will be more open to some advanced training.

When you train your dog, you need to establish control. Put yourself in an authoritative position, so that your dog knows to obey you. Avoid allowing your dog to lead you during walks. Instead, walk in front of your dog to show that you are the leader of this pack.

A clicker is one way you can help to reinforce acceptable behavior. To start using a clicker, all you need to do is make a positive association between the noise the clicker makes and great things happening. If you use the clicker when you give a treat, the dog will know what to expect. Your dog can realize that the click is a good sound, and more easily shape your dog’s behavior.

For a healthy, happy dog, you should provide your pet with plenty of treats and activities to keep its mind stimulated. Long walks through the woods or park should happen frequently as should playful interactions with a variety of toys. A bored pooch find ways to be entertained, like chewing up your favorite books and shoes. Give your dog something to do, and you will both be happier.

Never give up when training a dog. You must supply constant reinforcement for your dog; if you fail to do this, the dog may forget what you taught it. Keep in mind that training your dog is an on-going process, and just as important as providing him with food and shelter.

Any behavioral problems that crop up suddenly warrant a visit to your veterinarian to rule out health conditions. Behavior such as inappropriate waste elimination may indicate an underlining health issue. At times the pet may be in so much pain that he is unable to act appropriately. This acting out is the only way your pet can communicate with you in regards to a problem.

Know when you might need professional help. It can be hard to admit that your attempts to train your dog aren’t working, but professional dog trainers can teach you what to do so that you can be successful after all. A dog trainer can be invaluable in pointing out where the issues are occurring, and they can also put you back onto the right track.

If certain things trigger bad behavior in your dog, keep him occupied whenever you pass something that will tempt him to misbehave. For example, if your dog doesn’t behave well around other dogs, provide positive distractions when you move past other canines during outings. By doing this, you prevent your dog from making a habit of bad behavior by giving him something positive to associate with the trigger situation.

You don’t have to sacrifice an attractive home to have a dog. Having a rowdy or destructive dog can make it difficult to maintain a presentable home, but training your dog can easily fix this problem. Keeping these tips in mind can help you live in peace with your dog!
