Food becomes a big deal when you realize how powerful it can be for your body, mind and soul. Consciously choosing what and when to eat or not is a skill, that many ancient practices have discovered and use. One of my favourite and probably the oldest medicine is Ayurveda . Its teaching are a system that includes all holistic aspects of your being.
Today I would like to share with you a list of 5 pain relieving foods, inspired by the Ayurveda. Forget the aspirin and everything else made in the Big Pharma factory.
1.Ginger – According to a new study just reported in the Journal of Pain, published by the American Pain Society, daily doses of raw or heat-treated ginger effectively relieve muscle aches and discomfort — and that includes even severe pain following strenuous exercise. So far, the studies have shown that ginger appears to have anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties similar to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, but without the side effects (which can include gastrointestinal bleeding and ulcers). In one study, taking a daily dose of ginger (30 to 500 mg.) for four to 36 weeks successfully reduced knee pain in people suffering from osteoarthritis.
2. Turmeric – the most common spice used in the curry.Research has shown that turmeric works as well as any anti-inflammatory drug to reduce pain in the joints. The active ingredient curcumin, found in the turmeric, has been shown to be an extremely effective anti-inflammatory whose effects are well documented for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and fibromyalgia pain treatment. Available in powdered form in capsules, this ancient spice may be added to the diet daily. The recommended dose is 400-600 mg three times a day to reduce joint pain and inflammation.
3.Flax Seeds and Flax Oil-Freshly-ground flax seeds and cold-pressed flax oil, contain plentiful amounts of fatty acids known as Omega-3s. Do not cook with flax oil otherwise it will have the opposite effect-irritating the body’s tissues and causing pain.
4.Arnica -One of the best known uses for homeopathic Arnica is for the treatment of aches, pains, bruises, sprains, broken bones, sports and other injuries to both soft tissue and joints. It relieves arthritis and gout pain and is an excellent general pain reliever that has been shown to be as effective as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. It has a special affinity for relieving low-back pain.
5.Cherries-Muraleedharan Nair, PhD, professor of natural products and chemistry at Michigan State University, found that tart cherry extract is ten times more effective than aspirin at relieving inflammation. Only two tablespoons of the concentrated juice need to be taken daily for effective results. Sweet cherries have also been found to be effective.
Always remember pain is only the messenger of what might be going on in the body. Most of the time pain is good, because is the way your body is speaking to you.
