Dating Tips To Help Improve Your Dating Experience

Restored from the Empower Network archive (2011–2017), lightly edited to meet our current advertising standards. Views are the original author’s.

Today I will be sharing with you 10 dating tips that should help improve your dating experience. I found this article from the internet from a very reliable source. I am confident you will learn a lot from it just like I did. Enjoy!

10 Dating Tips to Help Improve Your Dating Experience

1. A date is a date is a date is a date is a…

It’s not a marriage proposal. It’s not a romantic comedy. It’s not a trip to the dentist.

It’s a short period of time with another human being getting to know each other’s story. Then you go home.

Don’t make a date into something more than a date. Or you won’t date.

2. Each date hones your taste.

If I asked you to describe your favorite whiskey, could you do it? Well, unless you’re a mountain man named Gus or hipster named Ivan, you probably couldn’t because you haven’t had much of any.

Same thing applies for dating – you can’t really define what you’re looking for in a guy or girl if you haven’t spent time with them. Each swig gives you a better understanding of the complexity of your taste.

3. Dating is about figuring out you in a relationship

(As much as it is finding a relationship).

When you date you’re learning about what you’re looking for in a relationship, but you’re also, and maybe more importantly, figuring out what and who you are in the context of a relationship.

4. Don’t begin “dating” someone you first met whilst both in swimsuits.

Sure dating this person seems like an outstanding idea at the time, but your judgment, in many ways, might be a little impaired. It might be exciting at the moment, but it’s more likely to end in “what did I do?” than “I do.”

5. Dates are supposed to be awkward

If 97% of your dates are horribly awkward, you’re right there with 97% of the population. Awkwardness and dating go together like Hugh Grant and romantic comedy.

Plus, how else are you going to have incredibly awesome stories to tell your friends and family later? Everyone loves an awkward first date story.

6. Don’t use alcohol to reduce the awkwardness

Definitely a personal one from me learned the wrong way.

A glass of wine or beer at dinner can be a fine thing. But don’t start using alcohol as a crutch to get you through the night. Calling in your Tipsy Self as a wing-man might be great for a few laughs, but by the end of the night Tipsy Self won’t usually have your best interests in mind.

7. Usually the best dates are when your plans go horribly wrong

I helped my friend for hours plan every aspect of a big date. Every detail was tailored with perfection.

And then, the night was a dud.

Both parties wanting to go home, they jumped into their separate cars, but one of them wouldn’t start.

In that dark, grocery store parking lot, no agenda or prescribed script, waiting for a tow truck — a spark was lit.

Sometimes a date has to go horribly wrong to allow the space for something to go right.

8. Like Attracts Like

Don’t worry so much about finding the right person. Worry about becoming the right person.

9. Marriage won’t fix any of your problems.

Marriage is just the beginning of revealing how many problems you really have. The more luggage you can begin to ditch in the dating process, the more space you’ll have to move into marriage well.

Newlywed in a small one bedroom apartment does not leave much space for your bags filled with crap.

10. The Inverse Dating Problem (Married with Baby)

Now married four years with two baby girls, we have the exact opposite dating problem. We know exactly who we want to spend time with, we just have no time to do it. All the bells and whistles of dating go out the door when just getting out of the door, without a baby in tow, is as luxurious as traveling to the Bahamas on a jet.

My wife and I are re-learning that dating is still important and now it takes a lot more intentionality. Because there comes a point when running to Target to grab diapers just doesn’t quite cut it any longer….More at 10 Tips for Dating in Your 20′s – Allison Vesterfelt
