GMO Foods To Avoid
Genetically-modified foods also known as GMOs are now being linked many health problems and immune disorders. It should come as no surprise that more and more people are trying to avoid them. Six very common foods that are often thought of as healthy are unfortunately almost always genetically modified. Eating fresh, organic foods is the best way to avoid these GMO foods to avoid. These foods hide in most packaged, prepared and processed products.
GMO Foods to Avoid
1. Wheat – Although wheat is technically not genetically modified, modern day wheat is also not your grandmother’s wheat. As a mutated offspring of the ancient grain, modern wheat is quickly becoming one of the biggest culprits on the food allergy list. Modern day wheat contains a protein called gliadin which binds into the opiate receptors in your brain and in most people stimulates appetite. As this common food is found in most pastries, cakes, breads, buns, pancakes, waffles and other baked goods as well as gravies and sauces, this one can be tricky to avoid but certainly not impossible. 2. Corn – According to the Center for Food Safety, currently up to 85% of corn is now a GMO food. Most packaged foods will contain high fructose corn syrup, corn syrup, corn starch, corn flour, cornmeal, corn oil, dextrose, fructose, glucose or “modified food starch.” If the food you choose contains any of these ingredients it is highly likely to be a consuming a GMO food to avoid.
3. Soy – According to the Center for Food Safety, currently up to 91% of soy is genetically modified. Be sure you choose “Certified USDA Organic” or “Certified Organic” soy if you eating it. That includes soy milk, soybeans, soy flour, soy oil, tofu, miso, tempeh, soy sauce and other soy-based foods. It also includes food or supplements containing lecithin, protein isolate, vegetable oil, vegetarian protein and isoflavones.
4. Canola – Most canola is not what it once was. Canola is a GMO food to avoid at all cost. Canola is now grown mostly from genetically-modified seeds. It is found in canola oil, vegetable oil and rapeseed oil. When baking, choose coconut oil or organic extra-virgin olive oil as an alternative.
5. Cotton – I know, you probably are thinking “ cotton is not a food.” And although that may be true but if you are buying any processed, packaged or prepared foods you’re probably eating cottonseed oil. Beware, it is most likely derived from GMO-cotton and should be avoided.
6. Sugar – Most processed, boxed and packaged foods contain sugar derived from sugar beets. According to the Center for Food Safety, 95% of sugar beets are currently GMO foods to avoid. If you must use sugar, look for 100% cane sugar, 100% organic sugar or evaporated cane sugar. Other sweet alternatives like stevia, coconut sugar or coconut sap should also be considered when you need a little sweetness.
