Another Day Helping  The Animal Rescue Effort

Today is another typical Saturday. Up at 5:00 AM to feed, water and cleanup any messes in the cages of the 20 plus dogs we foster in our animal rescue efforts. The dogs need at least an hour of running and playing in the acre + solid wood fenced back yard because it is Saturday. Saturday is transport day and we will leave the house about 7 am to begin an 800 mile round trip moving dogs to other dog rescue groups that have applications for adoption for these animals. My wife has spent weeks coordinating the event. Every application required that the prospective new owner meets the rigid standards of the dog rescue groups.

My daughter and her daughter, who wants to become a vet, will come to our house to make sure the dogs all get some more running time, and that the water bowls are all full.

Some of the animals in the animal rescue system are there because their good owners were just not able to keep them for reasons beyond their control. They were the lucky ones. But others were not quite so lucky as you will see in this video clip….

How Many Animals Need To Be Rescued By Animal Rescue Groups

Animal rescue is a never ending battle to provide homes for needy animals. According to the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), “between 6 and 8 million dogs and cats will be left at shelters each year.” That figure is healthy dogs and cats. The total number of all types of animals that are not healthy and by and large not adoptable through shelters, but can be found through the various animal rescue groups is easily 3 time that many. They will all need to be housed, fed, vetted, nursed back to health and in most cases transported to their forever home. In some cases it could several months or even years to bring the animal back to health so it can be adopted by a loving home.

For the most part those who participate in animal rescue volunteer their time and wallets to provide for the animals. There are tears when one of the animals doesn’t make after the volunteer has cared for the animal and the animal has tried so hard to survive. And there are also tears when when one survives and is once age a health specimen of the breed and it goes to its forever home, but these are tears of joy and pride.

So today is Saturday and we are on the road with a large rottweiler that was in the shelter and would have been euthanized because of the breeds vicious reputation but a rescued group in South Florida have accepted him and will get a good and proper home. There is also a little white Maltese whose previous owner had gotten him as a puppy but because of physical problems left over from the Viet Nam War he is no longer able to provide a good home. That Disabled Vet had tears running down his cheeks when he handed him over. There are also two mixed breed little dogs that are lovable and happy and already have their forever homes picked out for them.
