Cockatoos – Is this the Most Beautiful Australian Parrot?

Restored from the Empower Network archive (2011–2017), lightly edited to meet our current advertising standards. Views are the original author’s.

Have You Ever Seen the Australian Sulphur Crested Cockatoo – a Really Colourful Parrot?

I see them every day, everywhere. I hear them also, screeching and shouting, playing and loving life!

Whenever they alight in a gum tree, they start swinging upside down and teasing one another.

To me, they are the airborne equivalent of dolphins, the way they play around.

Whenever my husband and I live overseas for any extended period of time, the thing I really miss are the bird calls.

Listen to the Australian parrot s online

When overseas I listen to an Australian radio show called Australia All Over, available all over Australia on radio every Sunday morning, and also online as a podcast.

Macca has been presenting the show for over 20 years and it’s a very rural version of our country.

He uses recordings of birdcalls as interludes between various sections of his program.

The CSIRO has collected many Australian bird calls in the Australian National Wildlife Collection

Once I sat down for a rest in one spot of our local golf course and realised I could hear at least 6 different birdcalls close to me.

Video – Cockatoo Parrot s at Our Local Golf Course

As I tell you in the video, I used to have a cockatoo parrot as a pet. Many Australian families have one.

I also tell the really amazing story of my Grandfather who had one of these sulphur crested cockatoos as a pet in England many years ago. After having the bird over a few years, it had copied my Grandad’s language and could swear like a trooper!

He lost track of the parrot for over 20 years, I’m not sure how.

One day, he was collecting some furniture from a deceased estate for his second-hand shop in Grimsby.

He knocked on the door and called out “Hello”. A voice came back “Hello”.

He waited and then called out again, “Hello”. Again the reply came “Hello”.

He then called out again, “Hello – I’m here to pick up some furniture”.

The voice shrieked back, “Is that you, Charlie, you old bastard!”.
