Affiliate Marketing: When Sharing is Caring (and Earning)
Great things happen when we work together. Or, in the case of affiliate marketing, great amounts of money can be generated when we help each other out.
Here you’ll learn more about this income-producing Internet activity.
One of the best things about affiliate marketing is that it allows you to earn right at home. There’s no need to commute to work, no need to prepare lunch, no need to deal with haughty bosses. Just boot up your laptop, connect to the World Wide Web, and you’re all set.
Affiliate marketing is all about revenue-sharing. You have your own website, and you allow other websites to place advertisements or banners on your website. When you direct traffic to their website, or cause a user to purchase their product, you earn.
In this case, you are the “affiliate.” You earn on commission. The “advertiser” or “merchant” owns the website that pays you. It is through an “affiliate program” that the advertiser finds you.
Amazon is an example of a website with an affiliate program. Say your website is dedicated to book reviews of sob stories. You can allow Amazon to place banners or links to their site for all of Nicholas Sparks’ tearjerkers. You can even link to Amazon’s homepage itself. If you are able to direct your visitors to Amazon through those links, and they actually buy The Notebook or A Walk to Remember from Amazon, you earn. It’s that simple.
Here are some ways you can earn through affiliate marketing:
Pay Per Sale (also known as Cost Per Sale). You are paid depending on the number of sales your visitors generate through the advertisement.
Cost Per Action (also known as Pay Per Action). You are paid for each action a visitor does that is linked through the advertisement.
Pay Per Click (also known as Cost Per Click) You are paid for each time a visitor clicks on the advertisement.
Here are some ideas for websites you can create to appeal to advertisers:
A personal blog. If you write well, take great pictures, and lead a generally interesting life, readers will flock to you. Pretty soon you’ll draw advertisers because of your dedicated fan base.
Are you an expert on a particular topic, like fashion, basketball, or cars? Focus on that so that visitors will get your website immediately.
You could also showcase your talents in a video blog.
How do you choose an advertiser?
You will do well to treat the task the way you would when looking for a job or a romantic partner: find the right fit. For your website, that is.
If you have a website dedicated to schedules of classical concerts, don’t get sex toy or adult movie companies to place ads. It might just give your audience a heart attack. Plus, they might get turned off and get their musical kicks at another, more respectable website.
Do your homework and check out your advertiser’s website. You want to make sure you aren’t being scammed. Being a responsible Webmaster requires you to send your visitors to trustworthy websites.
