If you are new to blogging there are a few steps that you should take before you sit down to write your first post. Most people start with a few ideas and want to jump right into writing but the overall success of your blog will be better if you think about a few things before writing your first post.  Let’s get started with the thinking process before you set up your own blog and start blogging.

Select a topic

The first step you want to take is to select a topic. If you are like most people you decide you want to create a blog and have a general idea of what you want to blog about. However depending on your motive for blogging you may want to consider a couple of factors as you get started. If you are just creating a blog to be a journal and mainly want to be able to share it with family and friends what I am going to say next does not matter for you. If you are starting a blog with hopes to earn online income, you need to think a little more seriously about your topic. I’m not going to go into a lot of detail here but you need to make sure that there is a market for what you want to blog about. The best way is to this is with keyword research.

As you think about your topic I always suggest that when someone is in their initial stages of getting started that they brainstorm as many different ideas as possible. Once you have a list of ideas, keep adding to this list each time an idea pops into your head. As you set up your own blog, this list will be extremely valuable and help you be more efficient when you sit down to write a post.

Select a name for your blog

Now that you have your topic start to brainstorm what you want to call your blog.  You want to get creative here. I have seen some great blog titles out there that tell you exactly what the blog is about but in a very outside the box way. These catchy titles are great and can really engage your audience to begin with. Once you decide on a name, I recommend that you buy a domain name. This is a simple process, just go to GoDaddy.com and start searching.

Choose a blogging platform

Now that you have your topic and name, you are ready to set up your own blog on a blogging platform.  There are many to choose from and here are a few things to think about as you make your selection. There are two choices first you can set up your own blog by using a blog hosting site like Blogger, Tumbler or Hubpages. The second option is to host your blog and use blogging software, the most popular being WordPress.

A couple of thing to consider about each of the options; hosting your own site will cost a bit of money but in the long run will give you much more flexibility and control over your site. When you choose to set up your own blog on a blog hosting service you have less control but a lot of them are free. To help you make this decision, think about your objectives for creating the blog and that should help you with your decision.
