Smoothing Rough Edges ~ Social Media Marketing Mistakes To Avoid
Social Media Marketing Mistakes ~ Part 4: Smoothing Rough Edges
This is the final part to my 4 part series “Social Media Marketing Mistakes To Avoid.” Part 1 talked about being Over Populated; Part 2 was about not having enough presence with The Disappearing Act; Part 3 discussed Delaying The Inevitable; and today I’m going to talk about Smoothing Rough Edges. Now that we’ve gone over several problems and solutions for your social media marketing efforts, let’s put it all together and polish out those rough edges.
PROBLEM ~ Not Promoting Offers
For some reason there are people who think that social media is not a place for selling stuff. Well, I laugh at that! That is a complete myth. Social media channels are what gets the world talking and buzzing about. Haven’t you ever watched a live television show that is popping up ‘tweets’ during the show at the bottom of your TV screen? There are too many businesses losing out on money by not promoting offers, giveaways, products, campaigns, specials, etc…. The list goes on and on and on… these are FREE leads.
SOLUTION ~ Calendar Combo
Organization is super helpful when directing any type of social media marketing campaign. That’s why it’s a great idea to create a calendar combo where you can keep track of your social media promotions and content. Take the time to create an outline of what you plan to promote and when. This will help your income and success be more predictable. There are several successful online marketers that you will see deliberately roll out a marketing campaign at various times throughout the year. That is a wonderful marketing strategy.

PROBLEM ~ Stake Your Claim
Businesses that have a physical address will also have what’s called a “Place” page on Facebook, Yelp, Google+, and Foursquare. These pages show the business address, hours, map, and even has a check in. This means that the business has even more social media channels to use for marketing needs. So, if you own or work for a local business, don’t forget to stake your claim on these pages. You want your customers and prospects to be able to find your business.
SOLUTION ~ Search Social Media Places
Dive in to all the social media networks and search engines online for any pages or profiles that may exist and then try to stake your claim. Once you take control over it you can start updating any data that might not be correct. Add details for any current offers or any updates. For the Facebook place page you will need to search with the main feature to see if any place pages exist in the name of your business. Don’t waste your time on the “auto” created community pages because they cannot be claimed.

PROBLEM ~ Not Listening Enough
It’s important to listen to your surroundings and pay attention to your social media presence. There are many social media sites that can help you track customers and prospects and even competition that might be talking about your business, brand, or products. Getting good feedback reviews will help your brand and product sales and produce a good social media reputation. You might get some really good reviews and then you may get some horrible reviews. One of the simplest methods to check this is to do a vanity search on Google alerts. It is best to use a social media monitoring tool that can assist you in responding quickly. Make sure to listen to the feedback, acknowledge their thoughts, thank them, and handle negative posts as you see fit. Sometimes it’s best to leave those comments alone.
SOLUTION ~ Setup Alerts
Google has alerts that will inform you when someone is talking about your business name. You can setup these alerts for your name in quotes, using common keywords and URLs that pertain to your business, brand or products. There is no need to get too detailed, depending on your business size. For example, I would setup alerts for “marketingwithstephanie” and “facebook.com/marketingwithstephanie.” You could also check out Social Mention; there are other free social media monitoring tools though.
