The international bestseller book “Long Walk to Freedom” is an autobiography of Nelson Mandela, a great president of South Africa, who fought against racial oppressions.
This autobiography was written secretly by Mandela while he was imprisoned at Robben Island for 27 years. It is a very inspirational book that everyone must read.
Nelson Mandela is the first democratically elected president of South Africa. He is one of the greatest political leaders today. He spent long years of his life fighting against racial oppressions. His lifelong dedication to fight caused him to win the Nobel Peace Prize.
In 1990, he was released from 27 long years of imprisonment. He became the center of the most inspiring political drama since then. Because of him, South Africa moved towards multiracial government. He also led his country to democracy, having the majority rule. Through him, human rights and racial equity was realized.
What The Long Walk To Freedom Really Reveals
The book Long Walk to Freedom reveals Mandela’s life in a dramatic yet meaningful way. In includes many highlights of his personal and political life: He was born on July 18, 1918 in Transkei, South Africa. His father is a Thembu chief and he grew up from their tradition and tribal culture.
However, he learned the modern apartheid (a system of oppression) during his young age. In this book, he tells his early life in a dramatic prose. He was a poor student while working as a law clerk at Johannesburg. This is where he first learned politics and was awakened by it. He became a member of African National Congress (ANC) in 1944. He was very active in protesting against the apartheid policies of the ruling National Party in 1948.
He had great roles in the stagnant ANC rebirth and its Youth League formation during the 50’s. He was having a hard time trying to do his political agenda and family obligations at the same time. This caused him to be separated from his first wife and from his children. There was a political fight in the 50’s between the government and the ANC wherein he was an underground leader at that time.
He also mentioned the 1964 Rivonia Trial where he was sentenced to life imprisonment. After 27 years in prison, he had his freedom through complicated and delicate negotiations. When he was set free, he ended apartheid. In 1993, he received the Nobel Peace Prize and in 1994, he became the president of South Africa.
Is The Long Walk To Freedom Worth Reading?
Long Walk to Freedom has a very exceptional value and is highly recommended by almost all of its readers. Aside from the very inspirational story of Nelson Mandela, the manuscripts are written very well, despite the fact that it was written in prison. It was given 4.6 average star ratings out of 5, by hundreds of readers.
Many readers were really amazed by the life of this wonderful leader. However, though many people recount Mandela as a person with high standards, he still presented himself in the book in a real manner. He did not say that he is a perfect person.
Rather, he accepted his mistakes and told about them, aside from the great things he did. Of course, no matter how great he is, he is still a human being. What is really inspiring is how Mandela stood up for what he believes, no matter how hard the circumstances were. He did so even to the point that he did not have time for his family.
He admitted that the persons who will diligently serve their country’s needs, will not have the enjoyment with their family. He tried t
o reconcile his political activities with his love for his family but he failed.
He realized that he can only choose one from the two and he sacrificed his family for the sake of his countrymen. His fighting and sacrifices led him to many sufferings and trials for a long time.
It took him long years before he was able to reap the fruits of his labors.
This book Long Walk to Freedom by Nelson Mandela is very inspiring and delightful. It is a must-read book, not only for people who are into politics, but to every human being who want to learn many things about life.
Learning Nelson Mandela’s life long journey can teach readers how to stand firm for their beliefs. This book teaches people how to go on with their goals despite the very challenging situations. The results might not be attained right away but it will surely happen in the future. The book is really amazing!
