That’s GREAT! I love email marketing and I believe it is one of the key components to building relationships with your prospects and/or leads. And it also is a great way to get them to know, like and trust you which is also key to them buying your product or joining your business.

Email Marketing Best Practices

I have compiled 10 email marketing best practices to implement when you are creating an email campaign. Using these key practices in your email strategies will help ensure the success of whatever your goal may be for this type of marketing.

1. Match your message to your market

There are going to be some subjects that will be better for part of your list than others. A great way to get the right message to the right person is to segment your list into different categories. That way you can send the proper email to the right group. Also, I want to mention here that it is of utmost importance that you are consistent in your schedule of emails. Whether it be sending out emails every day or Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays… stay consistent.

2. Know your goals

In every aspect of business you must set goals and keep them in mind when you are creating a task such as an email campaign. What is the goal for your emails? And does the message/ campaign you are setting up match that as well. If you you are a restaurant and your goal is to sell more catering… you don’t want your emails to revolve around the regular restaurant. Obviously you want to have your message built on you catering business. Whatever goal you decide on for that campaign make sure that your market matches as well as the call to action you put into every email in that campaign.

3. Be sure to provide your list with VALUE

When you are sending out emails you want to make sure that your content is of value. Answer questions your list may have, solve problems of your list, show them results. Not only do you want to make sure your emails are created with your goal in mind, the content needs to be of value. More value content than the pitch. My advice as a mentor is to send out 3 value packed emails with a subtle call to action (read below) and then the 4th can be a bigger pitch. But if all your emails are “pitchy”, your list is going to unsubscribe so fast you won’t know what hit you.

4. Include a call-to-action (CTA)

Make sure that your emails have some sort of CTA. Make it easy for people to take the action you’d like them to take. It might be as simple as finding you on a social media site, register for training (such as a webinar), make a purchase or join your business.

5. Create a subject line that peaks their interest

The first goal of the email is to get your list to OPEN the email. Many people will make the decision whether or not to open an email simply by the subject line. Be sure to make it interesting and short. The subject line will get cut off if it’s too long. If you want your subject line to catch their eye, make sure it is funny or evokes a sense of urgency or excitement.

6. Especially in the subject line… avoid being spammy

You don’t want to spam filters to catch key spam words such as these 100 spam trigger words and phrases to avoid and bounce your email into the bottomless pit of the dreaded spam folder.  Using  exclamation marks!!! and/or all CAPS in the email subject line, will also give you a good chance of being tossed in the spam folder.

7. Social Media Connections

You can plug in social media buttons so that your readers can share your email with whatever social media you choose. When it’s the click of a button, it’s easy for them to share your awesome content. And that can lead to your information being seen by thousands more people than are just on your list. All free of charge. Cool, huh?

You also want to make sure that your email has an easy way for them to find you on their favorite social media site. Some people don’t read their emails that often. So if they can find the same information somewhere else you are covering your basis. And that just gives them more ways to share your stuff.

8. Your email should be pleasing to the eye.

It is imperative that your emails are nicely formatted and interesting looking. That means embedding images, images that link to a video, quotes, and bullet points where necessary. You don’t want your readers thinking you’re boring. Make the content as well as the look of the content interesting and eye-catching. Get boring and they will stop reading them and may even unsubscribe.

9. Your email needs to be mobile-friendly

With technology these days, emails are more often read on a tablet or smart phone. So, you want your emails to be formatted in such a way that they are easily displayed and read on the go through these kinds of devices. (You should not have an issue with this if you are using a dependable email subscription service – also known as an auto responder.)

10. Use an Auto-Responder

For those of you who are unfamiliar with this service, an auto-responder or email subscription service is a service that will allow you to segment your list into different categories depending on what information you are sharing (discussed above), keep your list secure as well as give you the ability to send emails to thousands at once either by a broadcast which sends the email out immediately. Or you can schedule pre written email to be sent out at a later time and/or date. Auto-responders also allow you to track your results. How many are opening your emails, how many are clicking through the call to action. This information is helpful to tweaking your email campaigns. It’s not how many emails you send out, it’s how many people are opening them and taking that call to action.
