So you’re starting…whatever it is you’re starting; here is why consistency will be your biggest ally.
Success is all about consistency around the fundamentals.
~ Robin Sharma Quotes from The Greatness Guide
The greats in any industry have worked many hours doing the same tasks with the utmost consistency bringing them to their current level of expertise. I did not understand this concept , bouncing from industry to industry. I was chasing something much more material–money! And when you keep chasing money, you end up with nothing.
Instead, try a dose of passion. It’s an amazing elixir for ADD of the JOB. That passion will create this thing called consistency of habits. You will find that doing the same thing over and over again isn’t mundane, but a learning experience. It isn’t tedious, but a way to create more value than yesterday.
I am an internet marketer, but I have found that I am most passionate about blogging. Consider this selfish, but it’s therapeutic. I am talking about topics that are valuable to you, the reader, but it’s also great to express myself. This is my voice.
There are days, however, when…
I…
JUST…
DON’T…
FEEL…
LIKE
IT!!!!
We’ve all been there. We might start stomping our feet, like a child throwing a temper. We put on a nice, big frown like we’ve smelled a skunk in the area. I’ve been there too, but this is the great news.
The law of consistency says that if you keep doing what you’re doing frequently you will develop a habit and become good at it over time. Also, people will take notice of your expertise because of the evolution of your craft. It’s a great concept that I learned in the restaurant industry and the strength and conditioning field.
A shining example of the law of consistency are the cooks who move through the ranks to chef.
There was a time when Ming Tsai used to not know how to cook. I can speak about him because I worked at his restaurant. He’s a great guy and an amazing cook. By the time I started working at his restaurant, he had been consistently cooking professionally for about 20 years.
20 YEARS!
I was lucky enough to hear the amount of wisdom he bestowed on us about cooking and I was floored. He doesn’t often cook on the line (lingo for in the kitchen), but when he did, I watched intensely, trying my hardest to get close to him like a rockstar.
How does he hold the pan?
When does he taste his food?
When does he season his food?
How does he plate his food?
The questions sputtered out like a stock market ticker. Because he had been around food for so long, he was able to blindly taste food and guess what it was pretty accurately.
I’m very positive that his level of expertise was quite low 20 years ago. Do you get my point? He worked everyday at his craft with a humongous amount of sweat. (It’s hot in the kitchen. But don’t worry, it never landed in the food. Or did it?) It is his passion and his level of consistency has made him one the few celebrity chefs in the world.
Apply the law of consistency to your passion. Do not think of it as work, but about getting better. Over time, you will get better. Your blogging with get better, your SEO will get better, your copywriting will get better, and anything else you do consistently…will get better.
“Perfection of effort is not required, by the way. It is the consistency of attempting to work these tools that brings the progress. It’s like anything else. If I want to tone muscle, lifting a ten-pound weight a few times every day will move me toward my goal much quicker than hoisting a fifty-pound barbell once a week. Yes, it really is true: “Slow and steady wins the race.” Just try a little, every day. You’ll see.”
