Pride and Prejudice Summary

The novel Pride and Prejudice written by Jane Austen was published in 1813. Taking place in Longbourn, England some time during the Napoleonic Wars (1797–1815). The news of a wealthy young man known as Charles Bingley moving into a manor of Netherfield Park spreads to the nearby village quickly, and catches the eye of the Bennets. The Bennets have five unmarried daughters, Jane, Elizabeth, Mary, Kitty, and Lydia and are excited to hear the news of Charles Bingley, hoping to have one of their daughters married. The Bennets visit Mr. Bingley and soon attends a ball which Mr. Bingley attends also. Jane and Mr. Bingley spend most of the night dancing with each other while Mr. Darcy (Mr Bingley’s friend) doesn’t enjoy the ball.

Over the next few weeks Jane and Mr. Bingley continue seeing each other and their friendship grows. Meanwhile Mr. Darcy becomes more fascinated with Elizabeth. Jane goes out the mansion one day to visit Mr. Bingley and is caught in a storm and falls ill. Her sister Elizabeth goes to the mansion to tend to ill Jane who has stayed there several days recovering. When Jane and Elizabeth return home, they see Mr. Collins there trying to inherit Mr. Bennet’s property. Mr. Collins then proposes to Elizabeth who turns him down. The Bennets meetup with some officers who then tell Elizabeth how cruel Darcy is for stealing his inheritance.

Mr. Bingley and Darcy leave for London and Jane is surprised to hear that Mr. Collins had married Charlotte Lucas whom is which Elizabeth’s best friend. Jane visits the city hoping to see Mr. Bingley while he fails to visit her.

Elizabeth visits Charlotte who happens to live by Darcy’s aunt. Darcy makes frequent

visits to the Collins where Elizabeth is staying. Darcy soon proposes to Elizabeth, refusing she says that he is arrogant and unpleasant, unhappy about him distancing Mr. Bingley and Jane and for taking that soldiers inheritance. Soon after Elizabeth receives a letter from Darcy explaining that Mr. Bingley and Jane’s romance wasn’t anything serious and that the soldier was a liar.

Elizabeth goes on a trip with the Gardiners, who are related. They visit the neighborhood of Pemberley (where Darcy lives). She visits making sure that Darcy is out. She is happy to be visiting such a nice place and only hears good about Darcy who shows up unexpectedly. Darcy is only kind towards Elizabeth.

When Elizabeth returns home she finds out that Lydia is nowhere to be found but sent a letter saying she was married to an officer. The Bennets search for Lydia but still have no luck finding her. Mr. Bingley returns and continues the relationship between him and Jane. Jane accepts Mr. Bingley’s marriage proposal. Then Darcy’s aunt visits Elizabeth telling her,  her nephew plans to propose to her and attempts to make Elizabeth refuse, not seeing her fit to be his bride. Darcy comes back to Netherfield and takes Elizabeth on a walk where they both confess their feeling for each other. Elizabeth and Darcy are soon married after. have you read Lord of the Flies?
