Commitment: It’s What You Need

Restored from the Empower Network archive (2011–2017), lightly edited to meet our current advertising standards. Views are the original author’s.

No matter what you are doing, having commitment and staying committed will allow you to achieve your goals, reach your dreams, and complete any challenge life throws your way.

What is commitment?

Here is a cool commitment quote that pretty much sums it up:

“There’s a difference between interest and commitment. When you’re interested in doing something, you do it only when circumstances permit. When you’re committed to something, you accept no excuses, only results.”

To me, “commitment” is the most important thing necessary to succeed in any aspect of your life.

When you have something you truly believe in (values, beliefs, etc.) you show commitment right there. Great leaders are a good example of being committed and showing persistence in almost everything they do.

Simple Steps to Commitment

SHOW COMMITMENT BY MAKING GOALS

Creating goals is a great way to show commitment. But don’t just make goals and not do anything else. Show commitment by staying committed to your goals but more importantly, to yourself. If your goals seem too big to complete, break them down to smaller chunks and make easier for yourself.

COMMIT WITH SMALL STEPS

There are different levels of commitment. If you are not as committed as you’d like to be and find it difficult to increase your commitment, make small and easy changes that will allow you to be more committed. If you currently commit only one hour to your goals, try bumping it to two and add a little more time the following week. Small simple steps like these will help you increase your commitment level by a lot over time.

SHARE YOUR COMMITMENT WITH OTHERS

By sharing your goals with others, you will find yourself in an increased state of commitment. If you tell your friends or co workers about any goals you want to accomplish, it no longer stays a personal commitment. They now know about what it is that you want to do and will hold you responsible if the job doesn’t get done. Apart from the commitment itself, it also becomes somewhat of a challenge.

COMMIT TO A SCHEDULE

Make a weekly or daily schedule of what needs to be done and stick to it. This is a little bit different than making goals. Set a time period specifically to focus on your primary tasks. Following a schedule shows a great level of commitment and dedication. Make sure you start with a short schedule that will allow you to commit your needed time to it; don’t start by setting up 50 hours a week to your project or goal. You will burn out that way and your commitment will start to fade away.

SHOW COMMITMENT BY TAKING ACTION

Bottom line: take action and focus on COMMITMENT. Nothing is ever going to happen if you don’t start. Don’t make excuses of why not to do something. Instead of focusing on the problem itself, focus on the solutions and how you can execute them.

Commitment will get your goals accomplished.

Commitment will allow you to break down barriers.

Commitment will get you through the ultimate challenge.
