The New YouTube Channel Design and Layout
Google has updated YouTube to maintain a consistent experience across multiple devices being used by consumers. The experience has to be consistent on everything from mobile devices to large Flat Screen TV’s.
YouTube also updated it’s look and updated it’s dimensions. You can now get the new format but, it won’t be a requirement until June.
It is easy to convert your YouTube channel design and layout and you can start playing around with it before most people get it.
If you look at the top of the page, there should be a link that advertises the new format. Just click on that link and proceed.
If you don’t see that link there yet, here is how you can make the change:
- Go to your ‘Video Manager’
- Click ‘Dashboard’ on left side
- On bottom right, look for ‘What’s New’ and click on the New Channel Design link
Some of the cool changes are:
- Channel Trailer
- Channel Art
- Channel Sections
The video below will show you how to convert your YouTube channel. It also shows a few advanced ways to make your videos more entertaining.

The Trailer: Now you have your own YouTube pages “Commercial” at the top of your channel. This should get more people to subscribe to your channel.
The video is located right under the header and starts to automatically play when non-subscribers visit your page for the first time. You want to keep this video short, pique interest and include a clear call to action commanding the viewer to subscribe.
The Sections function: is badass! You can now curate your videos by keyword! This function is an SEO lovers wet dream and will make it super easy for searchers to find relevant videos.
When you create sections, you can segment by ‘tags’ or keywords allowing you to have categories on your page by specific topics. So, your page can be divided into categories and allow visitors to find the most relevant videos quickly.
This may require you to go back through your videos and re-do your tags, but it should be well worth the effort down the road.
