Mrs. Know It All

Have you ever been around those types of people?

You know the ones I’m talking about.

The people who think they know everything……

Those people like, mothers…..

Yep, I said it.  I will be the first to admit that I as a mother, think I know everything that is best for my children.

Most of the time I am right… 

Here is one of those times.

I got a call from my teenage daughter who is away at a residential high school.  You can read my blog about that here.

She began talking to me about the fact that she doesn’t think attending this school is worth it.  She sounded very down and out.  Missing her friends at home and her family.  She didn’t think that she belonged there.

Mrs. Know It All to the rescue.

After I listened to her sad story.  I asked her if she was finished.  I wanted her to get out all of the negativity and complaining from her system.

Mrs. Know It All’s first plan of action.

I first told her that I loved her.

I love you too.

I asked her if she trusted me.

Yes.

I asked her if she thought I would ever lie to her.

No.

Now that the stage was set, I began to lift her up and empower her.

Mrs. Know It All strikes again.

I did not buy into her sob story.

The most important thing about this is…I didn’t want HER to buy into it either.

I told her that she was more than a conqueror.  She was a child of the Most High and made in His image.  I reminded her of her favorite scripture, Philippians 4:13.

She knows all of this stuff because she has been hearing it ALL her life.  She wouldn’t be in this prestigious school if she didn’t believe those things.

However, I shared with her a story about the process a caterpillar goes through to turn into a butterfly.  I thought she would be able to relate; she loves Science.

Mrs. Know It ALL on the prowl…

This school was new to her; different styles of teaching, new people, new teachers and new experiences.  It was unreasonable for her to think that for 15 years of the learning the “old” way and living at home with her dad and mom that she would adjust overnight to this “new” way of learning and be comfortable living away from home. School had only been in session for a month.

I made the analogy that every stage of her life has mimicked the stages of a butterfly: egg, caterpillar, pupa and butterfly.  Obviously as she was developing in my womb, that was from an egg.  As she grew as a young child to a pre-teen, experiencing her surroundings, she was the caterpillar.

Now this new stage of her life is the pupa.

When a caterpillar is this stage, it has to work, change and grow in order to get out of its cocoon.  It has to struggle and fight in order to gain the strength it needs to breakthrough.  But when it does, the final stage is a beautiful butterfly.

 Mrs. Know It All does it again….

I told her that she has to fight in order to be the best.  She has to undergo struggle to come out on top of her class.  She will have bad days.  Maybe some bad grades.  But it is a learning process.  You learn what NOT to do from your mistakes, or “life lessons” as I call them.

If she continues to fight and never give up, she will win.  Persistence is the key.  In order to build muscle, you have to life something heavy.

I won’t let her down as her mother.  I won’t let her fail.  But she must do her part too.

Through all of the tears, she told me that she would keep trying although it was hard.

I am proud of her.  I am proud of me.

If I hadn’t been surrounded by all of these wonderful people on the Dream Team in Empower Network, with their support and encouragement, I wouldn’t be this confident.

Am I really a Mrs. Know It All??

Of course I’m not.

I just want the best for my children and will do anything possible to assist them in their success. No matter how big or small.
